My car is a very low mileage (47,000km) 2007 530xi and I love it, but I always wanted a BMW v8....so this 2011 550i with 117,000km shows up for sale and it piqued my interest:

But...I read all the threads about N63 being a horrible engine. Should I just stop right here and be happy with my E60?

Skip this generation of the v8. Wait for a M550 to come off lease. The N63 is garbage. The N63TU ( 2014 and 2015 ) is better and believe the N63Tu2 is the latest but unsure of quality.

The engine is not bad. It just has Achilles heal. Every bmw has bad gaskets. All V8ís bmw make have bad valve stem seals

I'm back!

Would this example be any better since it's newer (2013)? https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-...ngId=488432021

I looked up the VIN and it still seems to be N63 (not the TU...but not sure if that would show up in the VIN?).

I'm going to keep trying! hahahaha

Definitely pass on that one, way overpriced in my opinion. (I realize it has a manual, which is rare)

N63TU only came in 2014-2016 F10s. Around here you can find 2014 550i for 18-22k. (Autos)

If you really want a manual, maybe consider getting an M5 instead?

Thanks Guys!

Ok, so I guess that eliminates 550i's entirely (any year)...as it seems they stopped making manual transmissions in 2014, which is the same time they seem to have introduced the N63TU! In other words, there was no manufactured combination of N63TU and 6-speed

The only viable option then for F10-series manuals, would be a 535i I guess then? Please tell me that is more reliable than the 550i?

BMW have been making the straight 6 for what seems like forever; it is their bread and butter. Engine-wise, the straight 6 is pretty bulletproof.

I'm back again

There is a BMW dealer close by with a 2011 550i CPO. I was questioning about the CCP and they said the following:

"the Customer Care Package did consist of replacement of the fuel feed line, vacuum pump and injectors."

Pressing for more details I got the following:

"Valve seals were replaced with the Care Package in March 2016. Valve cover gaskets would be done at the same time.
Major service at 100,000km is usually - engine coolant flush, fuel injection service spark plugs, power steering flush. The only one not completed with the Care Package is the power steering flush.
The next major service milestone will be at 160,000km (100,000km after the care package) or in 2021."

Does that turn the N63 engine into a good buy? Or it's still junk? lol

What is the cost? 550 with TU are not much more expensive and have better performance and good reliability

Thanks Dyelson,

$21k CDN = approx $16k USD

90,000km = 56,000miles

Yes, there are lots of N63TU, but not many/any with manual transmissions...I think they didn't make N63TU with 6-speed...
