Z4 Tranny Case Cancer

tech says the bolts and case are rusting badly. Wouldn't be able to change fluid without replacing. Big job?

Need more info (and a pic never hurts). What year? Manual or auto? And do you mean transmission pan? Because the transmission "case" should be aluminum, and not subject to rust.

I didn't understand what the tech was referring to...I guess. It's apparently the transmission oil pan that's rusting. He said it would be in the 6 or $700 range to replace it.

Sounds like your mechanic needs to make a boat payment. Still need your model/year/tranny type for anyone here to help you.

If the transmission is an automatic, the pan is plastic and won't rust. Your mechanic is handing you a line.

However, if the fluid needs to be replaced, the filter is integral with the pan so the whole pan will need to be replaced. $700 for the whole job, including the expensive ZF fluid (which is still less that the BMW OEM fluid) is about right.
