F31 Tire question

Have a F31 328d with 225x45-18 run flats. Time for new rubber and do not like the lack of rim protection. Looking at 245x45-18 (0.6" larger OD) and 255x40-18 (same OD as OEM). Same tire all around. Has anyone tried either combination?

Not worried with rim width as Tire Rack & Discount tire mfgrs say the 245 or 255 will go on the 8" rim. (I have a S2000 AP1 with 225/245 on 6.5"/7.5" rims with good results.)

My biggest question will be steering feel with the 255s

Also, run flats - considering non-run flat and carrying a plug kit/w compressor and fix-a-flat can for an extreme case.

You should really buy 17" rims and put on 225/50R17. IMO, 18" with OEM size 225/45R18 is fine for rim protection. I've never bent either set of rims that we have that size mounted on.

Whether RFT or not, you should carry pump and plug.

I agree with the pump & plug, always a good idea.

Rim protection, I should have clarified, it is more for curb rash than a bent rim. The tires and rim are almost in the same plane making curb rash very possible.

17. Do not go 255/45. Your speedometer will go wild. You will gain much more with 225/50 R17. Cheaper tire, less weight, it will be more dynamic than 245/55, which is pretty much SUV tire.

Would not go 255/45 as the OD is off by a lot. The 255/40 is spot on with the OEM 225/45.
