expert opinions??

I have in front of me so far a '95 318 for $1800, '93 525 with a blown headgasket for $1000, and am beginning to negotiate a '96 328i with 83k miles for somewhere over $4000. Don't know if it's gonna be 4500 or 5000. I was hoping to not exceed $3000 too much, but for a good deal, I can do about $4500. Your thoughts?

That depends too much on personal opinion. You need to tell us more about what you want.

Do you want a bigger car like a 5er? Do you mind an underpowered but economical 4cyl? Do you really want the I6 E36? Are you interested in doing DIY or would you have a shop doing it? Etc.

My thought without knowing your priorities would be to keep looking.
I don't know how many miles are on the 318 or what shape it's in, but assuming it's been well cared for then it's a good deal. But I would never want a 318 because I like power.

The 525 is pretty much just asking for trouble. It'll be underpowered for one, and HGs can be minor or very sensitive depending on a lot of factors. If you have to machine the head or deck the block or if coolant has been etching th bearings, then you're buying a $1000 paperweight that needs a whole new engine. But if it wasn't too serious, it could be a good deal if you DIY it. If you pay a mechanic, there are much better deals to be had on E34s.

The 328i is NOT many miles. The price is good. But it depends on maintenance history - around 90k E36's have LOTS of things start going wrong. Cooling and suspensions all need some work to them. If some things have already been replaced, it's a steal. If you're comfortable with DIY work, it's still a good price. If you've gotta pay a shop, you'll be surprised how quickly the repair bill can go up in the next year or 2.

I want the smaller e36 and the mileage blew me away. Most of 'em I've been looking at are around 150,000 miles for the same price. Actually a 2 door is what i really want, but is there much of a performance difference in the 2 and 4 door? I could have fun driving the 318, yeah, but the power would be a problem, which is why I want a 328 instead of a 325. But those prices really just threw me off...
My family and I have always done our own car work, but it's always been on domestics. Ford explorers, expeditions, dodge ram, and a chevy silverado. I assume a bimmer is a bit more complicated though? I heard somewhere that I would need special tools to DIY, but then again that's true for all the vehicles I've worked on.
I know about the cooling and suspension from the fest...heck probably from you, but I do think that unless it's a real pain I should be able to handle that by myself...I hope.
I assume you would advise the 328 then?
I just wish I could find one for a little less. I've been looking since my truck burned, without a lot of luck. Actually found one and the guy was asking $2500 because the front seal was leaking, then he turned around and wanted $3800. He said he fixed the transmission, but I don't trust him. I'd get it if it wasn't an automatic. Oh well...
Thanks for the reply Phantom.

I say don't do it . I say that only because you already have two cars (bmw's) to take care of. The money you can use to buy that 328, you can just fix the 5 and keep both cars up to par. And if you really want power just get another motor in the 325. In a nut-shell, use the money to maintain/repair your other cars . All my opinion of course .

Ok, makes sense. Then in that case, id hop on that 28. Like you said earlier, try to frop it down because I'm pretty sure that he/people would like to get rid of their cars whatever it takes. That's a very fair price, even at 4500, but it won't hurt to try and drop it. Good luck

Nearly impossible. The system is extraordinarily impressive how it works to prevent tampering. If there is a dot by the trip odometer, the mileage has been fooled with.

Not knowing your local market, 7k for the E36 is very much inline with a good condition low mileage E36. But I hear ya if you don't wanna spend that much.

Just be careful - any BMW with low miles for that good of a price (3-5k) WILL need something, almost guaranteed.

Dot? Alright...I'll watch out for dots, thanks.
But I might be able to talk him down to 5k, he said he has to think about it. But for that price he's not gonna have the dealer replace the tires, fix the front passenger window, and replace a cracked fog light.
Besides that, the car looks to be absolutely immaculate. The leather is still tight on the seats. I think everything is stock....
So it might be worth 1000 more than I was wanting to spend.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed....

foglights are cheap and very easy to diy

window is cause by youre foglights- what happened to me

the fuse kept blowing in the windows because the water was getting into the foglights and shorting it. after i replaced the foglights it was fine.

so just buy tires off tire rack and have them mounted and balenced- under 400$

My $.02: Buy the 328 if it passes the usual "buyer beware" inspection!

I agree. Buy the tires yourself. Any tires the dealer puts on will be mediocre quality. I am not just being a tire snob here (though I AM a tire snob : ). Just ask anyone if they've ever been pleased with tires a dealer slaps on a car.

Five grand for that 328 is still a great price. If you get a good feeling about it, and it passes a compression test, and the temperature gauge doesn't stay "cool" after ten minutes (sign of shot thermostat & possibly worse), consider it a possibility.

If the cooling system seems solid and the engine has good compression, the 328 is a very nice car. I love mine.

If you buy it, be sure to flush the transmission then give it new fluid. If you merely replace the fluid without flushing first, you run the risk that the prior owner(s) NEVER replaced the trans fluid (common!) and adding new fluid will cause long-varnished gunk to move like heart attack cholesterol in some fat dude's arteries, if you get what I mean.

Many the neglected transmission has been "fine" on bad old never-changed fluid, only to catastrophically fail when someone well meaningly replaced the fluid and loosened the gear-killing debris accumulated from of years of neglect!

I don't really know the difference in the sports seats vs regular ones. It's not that big a deal is it? Those look comfortable enough for me. I would rather a black interior, yeah, but tan is a LOT better than nothing. I was already thinking about switching to a black m3 interior in a few years. It might make a cool little project.

sports seat only come with the sport package right?

Sport seats you can feel yourself being held more when you take turns. Personal opinion I guess.

All the money you spend putting in m3 interior and trying to make your car look/perform like an m3, you could probably save your money now and use that money to actually buy an m3.

No I dont wanna be a poser, and I won't stick an m3 badge on the back or anything, I just like the interiors. I've found a couple wrecked ones where I can get everything inside for about $1000. Maybe even cheaper.... I know it's not easy to switch out everything though, but that's ok.

IMO, go with the 328, I agree with the post above, 318's are not quick, they are made for looks and fuel economy.

Think this is a currency conversion issue. What currency are you talking about?

for that you could easily get a fairly decent e46 in my area.

I only paid US$2,200 (1,553 Jordan Dinars) for my 95' 318is it had 185,000 miles on it (297,728 km) plus it needed about US$300 of maintenance.
