7 Series - E65 / E66 (2002 - 2008)
Discussion of BMW's 4th generation E65/E66 7 Series flagship. The E65 generated much controversy, due to its radical styling and iDrive user difficulties. Nonetheless, the E65 broke records to become the best-selling 7-series iteration ever, especially after its 2005 facelift.

They took it out, and swapped it with a refurbished unit and it worked great. That is, until I took my car to the dealer to get a new battery ($600!!!).

So the dealer calls me and says they cannot program the car because the part number for the L7 unit is wrong. The audio dealer says this shouldn't matter, but the BMW dealer insists it is so. A bit of research turned up there are only two L7 amp part numbers for my 2008 E66:

65126961389 (my old unit)

65126941681 (refurbished unit I purchased)

Apparently, I need the -1389 part number L7 amp to properly program my car. Sigh.

So now, I have to have the audio dealer fetch my turned in core unit, have the audio repair shop refurbish it, and swap out the unit I received with my old unit (with the two diodes replaced). Only, I'm not sure if the audio dealer will do the right thing and refund part of my money because they are now only selling me my repaired unit and not a newly refurbished unit. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Anyone else run into the 'unable to program' issue with their E66?

How would they know it was swapped out anyway? The battery has nothing to do with the logic 7. If you told them that's where you messed up the second time. First time you messed up is paying 1400 to refurbish it. When a new unit costs that much from the dealership anyways. And two getting your battery and registering it at the dealership. But Good luck!

What was your issues with your ask unit? I have no sounds, no saved radio stations, and car data won't update..... sounds familiar?

I had different problems....system sounded as the speakers had blown. You might want to call the repair location noted and he will tell you if your issues are something he can fix. I friend with a 2008 E66 also sent his to fix when he had different symptoms than I and was happy with the result.

I'll gamble and swap out. If it doesn't resolve the issue, then either buy a refurbished one or get yours refurbished, choice is yours. I personally don't see any harm in connecting a L7 from where ever to get your sound back, but as far as the aftermarket aspect of your concern, I'm clueless. My L7 is screwed up as well, I have no bass with distorted sound .

If you have an 07 like me, your amp should be able to be repaired.

If you aren't able to use your iDrive controls, then there is probably an issue with the fiber optics connection.

Ask unit

hi everyone I'm new here but I have an issue with my stero I took my 2007 750li to the dealer and they said it's the ask Module so my question is if the ask goes out does the sound/nav/sos all go out when ask is bad? That's what happens to me. I bought the car in October everything worked fine then one day I went to start the car and it wasn't getting any power so then I jumped it then I noticed one of the cables on the battery was not connected so I reconnected it tight then started the car right up then I noticed the nav/stereo and sos was not working so then took it to the dealer and they said that it was the ask. So I'm wondering if this is common and if it's fixable? The dealer said $1500 to fix the unit so is this true?

Yup it's your ask unit. I had swapped mines out and got all of my sound/Navi system working. I bought a refurbished one for $400 and paid $300 for the installation and programing.... $1500 is what you'll pay if you don't take the route I took. Good luck

Why not contact John & send your Ask unit in for repair .
I can guarantee you it will be no place near the $1500
the Dealer is trying to charge you ...

Hi Group;

Sorry to intrude but I have a couple of quick question hopefully someone can answer:

I have a faulty Becker L7 amplifier that needs to be replaced as a couple of speakers are not working and a couple were crackling prior that and from my research this is tell tell sign your amp needs to go. The questions then:

1 - Does the performance of my i-drive also depend on the amplifier? I think yes. My i-drive at times has a mind of its own as in I try and scroll through a menu to change a CD or song and the thing starts bouncing around like crazy and going through menus on its own. But sometimes it works like it should.

2 - Should I repair or replace the unit. I have read nothing but good reviews about Factory Radio Services out of Cali in this discussion. Supposedly they repair the unit and provide one year warranty for somthing like $350US. A new amp costs around $2300CND so definitely not looking to go that route but the other option is to get a used or refurbished unit off ebay for about the same price as the repair from Factory Radio Services. The question I have about this is none of the amps I was able to locate on eBay had same part number to each other or my amp, nor same EC#, KW#, HS #, Index and GX letter's. Basically every amp looked the same from the outside (like a stainless brick with same plug ins) but all had different ID numbering. All said they were compatible with my 2006 750Li but the last thing I need is to buy the thing and have my guy tell me it is not compatible.

Any and all advice on the above will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

tjducet, I sent my amp out to John for repairs and have been using it for about two months. So far, so good. I paid $250 + shipping ($70). I recommend him.

It may just be your amp and not your ASK. However, if you are certain that the sound you are hearing is coming from your front door speakers and not your subwoofers, your ask unit more than likely needs to be replaced. I would send both units to him for repair instead of buying one his refurbished ones. Your amp will probably be repairable since you have a new 7. Also, when my amp was bad, my iDrive worked fine. No issues. Your software may need to be updated.

Millie, what problems are you having?

Logic7 and ASK - Coded to Car?

I've been trying to figure out what to do to eliminate problems with the sound system in my '06 750i. I haven't been able to get a clear picture whether the Logic 7 Amp and the ASK need to be coded to the car or not. Can somebody answer me this? Thanks.

Flakey behaviour from the radio. Intermittent audio from systems like the proximity alerts. Possible malfunction of the traction control system (in cold weather), although I am not sure that's connected. I am thinking about either sending the Logic7 Amp out for a rebuild, or replacing it with a new unit. My question is whether a new unit needs to be coded to the car?
