09 Z4 Convertible top help

Hello all! First post here. I went to take my car out today (2009 Z4 30i) since it was the first real nice top down day this year here in NY and I noticed while the top was opening it was stuttering. It was shaking the entire car pretty violently, but it closed smoothly. I repeated it 3 more times and the same happened. Has anyone else had that problem? And if so what was it?

Thanks in advance. JM

Did you have your car on a trickle charger over the winter? Were you opening the top with the engine off? If yes to both, you're battery may have been weak and wasn't supplying enough juice to open the roof.

No to both, but I will be testing the battery today. Thanks

It takes a LOT of power out of the battery when opening or closing the roof. BMW recommend that you always operate the roof with the engine running which defeats the object of being able to open and close the roof with the key when you are not in the car?

Replaced Battery, same problem with the top. Went to a local convertible top repair shop and they had no idea. He said there's no hydraulic leak and the motor sounds strong. He said to bring it to BMW service so they can test it, exactly what I was trying to avoid. Going to change relay first...we'll see...
