M47 EGR problems?

Hey guys, I could do with some help with my 2007 X3 2.0d (E83 LCI, M47TU engine, built June 07). The problem I have is that it's sporadically hunting like crazy when idling (only appears to be when the engine is warm), also there's a bad hesitation at light throttle at around 1500rpm (completely fine on heavy throttle) I noticed that if I disable the EGR (disconnect the vacuum hose and bung the hose with a rivet), both of these problems go away - it runs and drives perfectly, but the MIL is on.

My understanding is that the EGR shouldn't open at idle? Is this correct? There's defiantly sporadic vacuum in the hose.

Any help would be appreciated, and I do have a video of the hunting, but I'm not sure how to post it?

Most folk here have gas (petrol) engines, so be sure to visit the diesel forum on this site.

However ... I'd do a smoke test, and also look at what controls the vacuum to your EGR -- some kind of solenoid, etc.?
