Would you trade

Would you trade a '15 550 for a '16 535 even? Same options and miles.

Yes, but I would probably trade it for a '16 640i.

If you're worried about the whole BMW V8 valve stem seal thing, oh, Hell yeah. If you want better MPG, yes. But, only if I knew the history of the car and owner. There are a lot of unknowns with a used car, and they're always negative. That would stop me from swapping.

I had a snooty Scottish math instructor back in the early-1980's, nicknamed the Loch Ness Monster. On exams, he'd state a math problem followed by "Discuss."

"Damn, Gordon. Why do you have to always be such a **** and put such hard problems on the tests?"

What he meant by "discuss" was for us to solve the math problem.

I looked him up. He's still there, got his Ph. D. and is now a full professor. He's also gray-haired, skinny, and smiling in his photo on the university's website. He actually looks like a likable person (now).

Yes, I would trade. I just picked up my 2016 535i with 24k miles on it about a month ago. I know the V8 power can be intoxicating, but the inline-6 is more than quick enough. There are a ton of 2016 CPO 535i models hitting dealer lots right now so a good deal can be found. Seeing how many of the N63 V8s just seize up without warning is enough to scare me away from them forever.

Yes vote here, especially if the 535 is a diesel.

Would I trade a 445 HP V8 for a 300 HP I6? Nope...I'm not at that point in my life yet.

But why are you asking this and what is the context for the question? The reasons why someone would chose or not chose to do this is as varied as the replies in this thread.

Would you trade your e39 540i/6 for a 530i/5? The e39 inline 6 model's rack-n-pinion steering is usually hailed greater than the V8's recirculating ball set-up...thus the e39 I6 tends to get the nod as the better handling e39 model. But you selected the e39 540i/6...did you go for the power over the handling?

No, I'm not interested in owning a 535 as I didn't find the driving experience remotely comparable to the 550. My 2014 has the N63TU and I'm not convinced the risk in long term ownership of the tu is going to be any different than a 535. My car has 82k miles now, 32k put on by me, and thus far it's only required standard maintenance.

If your not comfortable owning the 550, why not just buy something else entirely? Spending money to trade your car in for a slower version seems strange, plenty of other choices out there.

Thank you...best argument...which is why I still own the 540 and I've heard the same
arguments years ago. I just needed to hear what made sense to me. I said to me folks...I know we all have opinions.

Thanks QSilver7, and Zugdud!

I appreciate everyone's input and opinions.

A whopping 1/2 second slower to 60 was close enough for me to opt for BMW's bread-and-butter I6. From what I've read, BMW has had issues with the V8's since they introduced them.

To answer the question, would I trade? Depends on your requirements, needs and desires.

There's more to it than 0.5 of a second on a 0-60 spreadsheet when comparing a 535 to 550.

I don't know where the most accurate data on that is anyway. accelerationtimes.com has the difference as 5.7s vs 4.5s to 60. But I see different numbers on different sites etc etc.

What I do know is when I can coming from a 2009 335i to a 5 series, I tested several 535's and 550's (the wife has a F10 528 so I knew that one already) and I can tell you there is a significant difference between the two. Also the 335 was and felt faster than the 535 - so that was a hard sell for me.

But I'm getting off topic.

If I wanted a more reliable car, which is what I think seems to be the undercurrent of this - I'd trade my 550 for a bottom of the range Accord or Camry.

Since the E39 was brought up and I owned the 540, 530 and the 525 and I still think it was one of BMWs best offerings-

Would I switch to the I6 E39? Maybe - there was a significant difference in handling between them, the braking power and front end weight all favoring the I6.

These differences hardly exist with the F10 - with the V8 the net gain is power (bar possible headaches with maintenance although that hasn’t occurred to me)

To me, the F10 is a boat. The V8 is just a faster boat.
