Whistling noise from wind at ~40 MPH?

I have a very annoying noise in my F10 when driving around 40 MPH in town. I thought maybe it was just the cold dense air, but now I'm not sure. It sounds like it's coming from the windshield area but I'm not sure. Has anyone else experienced this issue with their f10? Any known areas for wind noise on this model?

The usual suspects are wipers (no kidding), mirrors, slightly open window or moonroof and failing windshield seal.

It may have started after I adjusted the wiper position. The drivers side wiper was down quite a ways so when it wiped, it was very far from the edge.

Is a failing windshield seal common on the F10?

I wouldn't say so. It is usually caused by a poor windshield install. I've had it happen, but it usually manifests itself pretty quickly.

My guess is the wiper arm. They will whistle like a train!

Hmm, I need to see if I can find out the normal wiper position for the F10. Not sure at what position it's supposed to be mounted.

Nerdboss - I have been experiencing the same whistle that seems to be coming from the front dash when I reach 40 mph for months now. The dealer nor my indy can identify the cause. Keep us posted when you find the solution.

Thanks.

I'm also still trying to find the cause. =(

If I find the solution I'll post it.

Close drivers door and then seal between door and frame with masking tape.

Get in via the passenger's door and drive around. If the whistle is gone, it's door related.

If the noise is still there, remove the wiper assembly and repeat.

Next up is the windshield seal. More masking tape

Think 3m painters tape would work?

If it's one of the seals, do you think it would be covered under warranty? I have one month left of the factory bumper to bumper.

I masked everything off and no go. I think itís coming from the sunroof, perhaps the sunroof drains are whistling? Where do they drain at?

Open the sunroof and using a glass of water and a straw, suck a mouthfull and squirt it down each corner, there are 4 drain tubes.
Look under the car and you will see it dripping. fronts inside the back of the front wheels and the back just about inside the jack points

after reading your post, yes you can could mask off the 2 front drain holes from the sunroof seat but not the back ones, of course it would be better to completely mask off the gap between the glass and the body and see what happens

Did you pop the wiper?

Its not clear to me how the mirror would make the noise though.

If the car is in warranty, have BMW fix it.

I'm not sure BMW would be able to fix it. I'm wondering if it started because of the really dense air outside. It's 17 outside right now in Oklahoma. I masked off the gaps in the mirrors, the top of the windshield where it meets the roof, the lower cowling, and I raised the wipers into the service position and drove that way. No changes. I notice the noise is louder with the sunroof open, so I think the whistling noise may be coming from there.

I may have BMW take a look, do you think they'd look at it under warranty just for that issue? Again, if I can't figure it out im not sure if they can.

Another simple check. I noticed my sunroof creaking at times when it's "cold" outside. I lubricated the trim and the edge of the sunroof I could reach with the roof open and creak gone. Maybe through some trim conditioner on that area and see what that does. I used 303 Aerospace Protectant.

Mine isn't creaking. The outside whisting noise is louder with the roof open. I can hear it quite well when I have the roof open and I hold the wind deflector down with my hand while driving. Its driving me mad, maybe its just the cold dense air? I know the dealer isn't going to be much help.

My 15 year old E60 530i has no wind noise. I'm starting to think the E60 was a better built car. =(

I was more or less equating a creak with a leak.

#1 place that I have seen is the window seals at the base of the windows where it meets the doors. With Windows down you can press this trim inwards to help close up any gaps. Taping off as well should prove the point but the very best way to Effectively measure is with a Noise Measuring dB device, yes there are apps now for your smart phone, not so accurate but good enough to measure differences and frequencies.

Not yet. Seems to be tied to very cold weather. I'm in Oklahoma and it's in the low 20s right now. Once it's like in the 50s outside, there is no wind noise. I'm guessing the cold dense and dry air is more prone to making noise. I checked all seals and they're fine. Idk what could be the cause.
