I started getting intermittent SOS warnings after a few of days of getting the car (I'm a second owner). Then I have updated the software to the latest from https://www.bmw.com/content/bmw/mark...e-updates.html and haven't seen the warnings since.

I also emailed my service adviser and got the following respond:

The emergency call malfunction could be coming on if the dealer you purchased it from did not contact BMW to let them know you are the new owner. You can try pressing that SOS button in the car and when they answer just let them know what you are seeing and they should be able to help you. If not and they say the car needs to be looked at then we can schedule you in and take a look.

You may try that as well.

I have the same issue in my '14 M5. Over the weekend the "SOS Service Malfunction" warning came on. I took it into the dealer today (charged me $100 just for the diagnostics) and they told me the TCB needs to be replaced. I am finding the part 84109297787 online for about $27. Does anyone have any videos or instructions on how to replace it as a DIY task. Or is this something that I have to take to a mechanic?

I had a similar warning and it turned out to be a simple battery replacement. There is a small battery in the unit (TCB??) in the trunk - left-hand side. The black plastic cover slides off in the direction of the arrows and there is the battery. No need to remove the unit (all assuming this is in fact your problem). Good luck.

Well, I was actually told that it was a 2 hour labor job and that they would have to remove part the roof or ceiling or something. I'll try to get more accurate description from the dealer.

SOS issues in the past have sometimes been solved by deleting all paired Bluetooth devices and then reinstalling. Different BMW but worth a try. Worked for me.

when I go pick up my car from the dealer tomorrow, I will try out all of the above mentioned solutions. I can't believe I freaking paid $100 for them to do a diagnostic test. What an idiot I am

A low battery after a few short drive startups causes random faults. One headlight not working, SOS failure, etc. keep that in mind.
