MotorTrend 4 Series Gran Coupe Review

The 4 Series Gran Coupe is pretty much BMW's 4 Series Coupe with 2 doors added and lift back in place of a trunk. While the 4 GC shares the same length, width, wheelbase and track with 2 door version, the roofline of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is 4.4 inches (112 mm) longer and slopes gently to the rear of the vehicle. This longer roofline gives rear passengers easier entry and more headroom, with some extra space for luggage. It sounds like a good alternative to the coupe, if you are looking to haul around more people and stuff, but does it come close to the Coupe in handling? Motor Trend took a spin in the new Gran Coupe and while they didn't have a lot to say about the 4 GC, here are a few key points from their review.

So how does it drive? Just as well as the other 4 Series variants. Any loss in total body rigidity did not make itself apparent while jinking through the many curves tracing the Rio Ebro in northeast Spain. Naturally BMW took the precaution of equipping every press vehicle at the launch as a 428i with the $3500 M Sport package

And don't feel compelled to spring for the six; the four makes terrific noises and acquits itself admirably in the dash from corner to corner. Just make sure you secure whatever you're carrying in all that newfound luggage space.

Fold the seats down and there's 45.9 cubic feet of room-enough to accommodate two bicycles without removing the front wheels. And the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seatback easily accommodates rear passengers and four sets of skis.

Color us skeptical of BMW product specialists' assurances that these vehicles all behave so differently that buyers won't be conflicted or confused. We suggest you save time in the dealership by first employing a dart board at home.

That's why BMW now has the BMW Genius to help people decide which numb steering will be the best for them.

I'm just waiting for the 4 series coupe wagon. All the practicality of a coupe with the looks of a wagon. Great for hauling flat pack ikea. The sloping roof of a coupe with a 15 inch tall hatch at the back that actuqlly then opens up all the way over the rear seats so you can pack normal sized things in it. Good luck opening the hatch in a garage though. All for only $7.5k for than the 3er wagon.
