Anchorage 2019

I'M BACK !

I'm sure you've all been wondering where the hell I've been for the past 3 weeks..... Right ? Am I right ? ..........

Anyways, it was that time of year again, my annual Alaska excursion to get to my closest BMW dealer. For those who might not have seen my previous posts:

Anchorage 2017 - https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh....php?t=1060665
Anchorage 2018 - https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh....php?t=1293099

Every year I drive to my BMW dealer and get some servicing done. I do this because I have very limited options in the city where I live (I have one competent indy mechanic who knows BMWs, that's pretty much it). So, I do get the odd thing here and there done where I live, but I save most of my major servicing for my annual trip.

This year, the wife and I both drove separate vehicles. I recently picked up a 2010 335i (that I just got home this past May, find that thread here: https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh....php?t=1329227 ), so it needed some servicing, along with the E84 X1. The drive, unlike last year, was pretty uneventful (which, don't get me wrong, I'm very happy about). Here's the laundry list of what we had done:

X1
Oil change
Battery replacement and coding
Coolant flush (rated at -45 degrees Fahrenheit)
Brake fluid change
Power steering fluid change
New front windshield

335i
Oil change
Brake fluid change
Transmission fluid / filter change
Transfer case fluid change
Power steering fluid change
Coolant flush and change (rated at -45 degrees Fahrenheit)
Battery replacement and coding
New front windshield

In addition, a few troubleshooting things, such as a funny whine my 335i has sometimes and an exhaust rattle on the X1. Nothing too concerning. I also brought along some parts - I had purchased new ignition coils / plugs, drive belt / idler pulley / tensioner, and a cabin air filter for the 335i that just never got replaced before this trip. I didn't know if the dealer would install customer-supplied parts, but indeed they did, and just charged me labour I've said it before but I'll say it again - this dealership excels at customer service. I continue to have great experiences here, and will continue to speak very highly of this location.

All said and done, nothing too surprising. The X1's muffler flaps are broken and it needs replacing. $1,250.00 installed. Ouch ! I mean I'm not cheap (just read some of my other threads and comments that I post....), but damn, it's a muffler I'll be putting that off until next year, but I will end up getting it done. I believe in not letting too many things go wrong with a vehicle, and keeping them as maintained as possible.

I would have gotten the standard courtesy loaner vehicle, but we actually built a family vacation around this trip, and ended up flying out of Anchorage to the southern 48 (we did Seattle, New York City, Lake Placid and Cape Cod / Nantucket Island). We did get a ride to the airport from the dealership though

We did get a 2018 BMW X3 as a rental vehicle in NYC (we drove ourselves to Lake Placid, Cape Cod and back). This isn't the first time I've driven an X3 or X5, but it is the first time I've had one for a longer period of time (we put over 1,500 miles on it while we had it). TBH, I didn't really fall in love with it Don't get me wrong - it's a great SUV and the features it had were awesome (forward collision avoidance, the new iDrive, etc). It just drives like a tank though. The handling characteristics are garbage, but this isn't the fault of the X3 specifically, it's just the whole SUV platform, it's not built for handling or minimal body roll. This is why I love the E84 X1 so much. It's technically an "SUV", but it's more like a crossover, and it handles much more like a car than an SUV. Personally, I also LOVE the aesthetics of the E84 X1.

Anyways, we got back last night after a long day of driving. I enjoy the drive, but it does make for a pretty long day. All in all, another great trip to Alaska's biggest city and my closest dealership Now, onto the pics, because I know all of you came here just for the pics

Do you mind sharing the Indy you use? My son is in Fairbanks with his E39 and looking for a mechanic. Also, share the name of the dealer in Anchorage.

Thanks

So I'm in Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory (Canadian side next to Alaska). The indy I use here is Triple 18 Auto Services.

In Anchorage, there is only 1 BMW dealer. BMW of Anchorage. It's a Lithia-owned dealership.
