Request for help M3 clunk Baltimore/DC area

I just purchsed 2002 M3 vert with 91K on the clock. Carbon black with black interiof. I have had many BMWs but this is my first M3 so I am still learning the quirks of the car. It seem to have the quite the clunking when letting out the clutch. I know that this is a characteristic of M3 but it sounds worse than I think it should. It seems to me that is probably the dual mass flywheel but I was wondering if someone who knows their way around the M3 would be willing to help me out with the diagnosis. Pulling the tranny and changing the clutch is no small undertaking but if I need to do it I will. But I would like someone to confirm that it is really problem or if not let me know that it is just a quirk of the car. 2002 M3 with 91K. The PPI did not identify this as an issue so I am wondering if I really need to sort it out or not. If someone is interested in helping me please PM me.

This may not be helpful but I recently had a clunking sound when shifting into Reverse on an e46 330i. It turned out to be the differential mount, specifically the Rear Differential Mount that was cracked and leaking. Replacing it fixed the issue. Just something to consider.

Yeah, there's a lot of slap (clearance) in the E46 M3s' drive-line, from right out of the factory. The rear diff, and CV joints on the axles can add to the total slap.

I don't remember if the driveshaft has CV or universal joints. But, they're both a common source of slap. With the car on a lift, you can twist the driveshaft and see how much slap there is.

I have M-Clunk when letting out of the clutch since day one too. But if you need inspection for the peace of mind, I highly recommend BMC Automotive services in Chantilly. The owner "Chai" is knowledgeable and does not push you for things you don't need. http://bmcautomotive.net/
I recently had my '03 clutch, euro valve preventive replacement, diff bushing leak fix,etc. done there at much better price that other BMW specialists around the area (of coure a lot cheaper than dealerships)

How much slap there should be ?

I just got a 2002 two and observed the clunk when pressing the clutch. Had it thoroughly inspected from under the car and was told this car was aggressively put together, meaning it doesn’t have the smoothes shifts etc... it is meant for racing
