Thank you for your message. The problem turned out to be the stereo head unit. I bought a reconditioned unit on Ebay, installed it (easy) and all is well.

Thanks

When I returned to my car last night the problem was gone and it has not occurred since.

Are there any aftermarket head units that can replace the factory head unit?

The thing in the middle of your dash that the music or nav bluetooth functions
originates from . Be it a Pro Radio or a Nav/drive in the case of a BMW.
which then feeds the speakers or feeds and amplifier that feeds the speakers.

The brains of the entertainment info system.

CTUNA, thank you for the explanation and the link to the write up on the difference between a radio and head unit. Much appreciated. Thanks again.

There pretty much the same .
Head unit is a loosely used term for whatever is in the center of your dash, that's not
temperaturte contols. In modern cars sometimes the temp controls are part of it.
