Finally ordered 2020 M550

I was going back/forth between the M550 and the new Audi S6 but (1) I still can't test drive (or see) an S6; (2) power is less and 0-60 is higher than the M550; and (3) Audi won't seem to negotiate the price so the Audi is significantly more expensive.

Here is the build code of my order. I also added the 4-zone climate to it.

very nice, congrats! i'm still iffy on the audi - it looks nice and sleek but not too aggressive enough for my liking. The M550i will destroy it performance wise and like you said the deal will be much better.

so if the Audi is more expensive and slower, what is it about the Audi that you like better?

I was ready for something different, and really wanted an A6, but Audi took one look the at the offer I was given from BMW and said, we can't even come close - sorry, dude. And totally let me walk away without even trying. So, I'm back in another BMW and quite happy. But I have to admit, the Audi is still a head-turner for me.

Interesting. I cross shopped the Volvo XC60 (I wanted a phev that would qualify to keep me in the car pool lane). I didn't tell them what I was offered by BMW but the MSRP of both was about the same (roughly $73K) but Volvo offfered very little compared to BMW. As it turned out, the BMW drove better, was more responsive and less expensive despite the alleged 150 HP deficit in the BMW compared to the Volvo.

Ultimately, I think that MSRP is a meaningless number when comparing different company cars. I'm glad you are enjoying your car.

Totally agree! I am looking for a M550, other than black or white, but it seems that 80% of new or used are that color. While I own a black Porsche 911 turbo, which is a great color for about 10 minutes after washing, I would not ever own another black car again!

My 911-4S cab (991) is white and I'd never get another white car again. Audi has a dark blue that I really like but I've moved past the S6 and the rest of the BMW colors aren't really exciting to me.

I think I am different from most people. To me, the exterior is like the exterior on a house and the interior is like my living room. I care more for the living room where I live than the exterior where everyone else is. So when I purchased my car, I focused more on the interior (nappa leather, leather dash, etc.).

But, as always, different strokes for different folks.

I'm the same way. I work from the inside out. And I've grown to hate black interiors. But it seems that 90% of cars stocked have black interiors.

I have a white 2020 540 arriving in 2 weeks so curious why you would never order another white car again? Thanks.

I have to make a decision in March whether to go with BMW again when my 2017 540 M-Sport lease is up or go with the A7. The A6 is an option, but just can't get into it. Now thinking about moving up to the M550XI. About $10K more than a 540XI with similar interior and equipment, but I always wanted to go back to a larger engine and it does give me a chance to move up to 20 inch wheels and non-run flat tires with BMW's blessings. Thought insurance would be an issue, but my agent ran it and the 550 was only $509.00 a half full coverage. The A7 came out to $569.00. Betting the lease payment with no cap cost reduction will also come out less on the 550 compared to the A7.

Has anyone gone from a 540 to a 550 and regretted it? Larger engine, more weight up front? Anyone compare 20 inch run flat to the non-run flat? Both are summer tires, so potholes should be minimum. Any ride or failure issues? Thanks.

IMHO, there is no comparison between the M550i and the 540i. You really need to drive a M550i to compare. The M550i is way more powerful and tight as compared to the 540i. Donít go with the 20Ē rims, you will be sorry with tire failures and bent rims. The sidewall is way too small to handle our roads and highways these days.

I compared the 540 and 550 when shopping and the 550 was far and away a better car to drive IMO.

I have the 20" wheels with non runflat Michelin PSS. Great ride and no issues so far even after hitting a couple small potholes/sewer caps at 40-45 mph.

However, the roads are reasonably good where I live/drive, so my wheels/tires haven't really had to endure much abuse.

Thanks for the feedback. I have 19 inch runflat all seasons that I run all year round. Used them since my F10 and the dreaded Goodyear LSI's. In that time I have had only one tire replaced and that was a Bridgestone Driveguard this year. Covered under warranty. Plan would be to go with a BMW winter wheel and tire package. Believe they are the 646 19 inch and actual winter tires. My dealer stores the set not in use at no charge.

I will be taking a test drive in the next couple of months. Priced both out on the BMW website. Only about a $9,000 difference because some of my options on the 540 appear to be standard on the 550. Have a feeling it will be the residual and maybe the buy money factor that skew the payment.

Congratulations!

Did you end up purchasing in the Seattle area? Would you mind sharing what you paid?

Thanks!

From a BMW dealer in British Columbia, Canada. 2.5 years left on warranty and free maintenance (Canadian cars have four year free maintenance). Warranty transfers, but I have to drive up to BC for the free maintenance...not a problem, I am up there frequently. Canadian cars come with a lot more standard features, like park assist, executive package, anthracite/alcantara headliner and a few others. But you have to pay federal tax (GST) which is not refundable, and you have to pay 2.9% US customs duties to import. I am currently waiting for paperwork from BMW NA so I can import the car (meets USA crash and emission standards).
After I pay US Customs duties (and a plane ticket up there), I think I will be all in at just under $59k. I would have happily bought local, but a lack of inventory in WA/OR...and few cars with M668 wheels and colors I was interested in. I think sedans are not as popular as SAVs in the NW.

I really like the 2020 upgrades and was tempted to simply order a new car through BMW Seattle.

Nice! I live in Vancouver, WA and the pickings are slim for M550s. I will probably have to purchase out of state. I would love a 2020, but I am too cheap! Besides, these cars depreciate fast. I am not will to pay $90K. Let somebody else take the hit.

Nice looking build. That Mediterranean Blue with ivory Napa and grey wood is sublime!
