program key fob for 2011 328i convertible?

I have watched several videos online and some show a key diagram on the steering column but my vehicle does not have that diagram. And I have seen some where where you install a working key and then the replacement but that is not working either.

Is there a way to do this myself?

Thanks much for any advice!

Where did you obtain the key fob which you are trying to use?

Ordinarily, a valid owner requests the key for a specific VIN, and BMW NA sends to your BMW dealer a pre-coded key with an ID number burned into it, which matches the 'next key ID' in a listed series of 10 key IDs which match the 10 IDs already burned into the CAS at the factory when the car was made.
If your key ID does NOT match one of the 10 ID numbers in the CAS, there is no way to make it work...It is NOT POSSIBLE to 'reprogram' the key ID number that is burned into a key fob, but it is possible (with the right tools) to burn an ID into a blank key.

The video sequence, to 'activate' a new key after using a working key, will only work if the key ID number is in the list burned into the CAS already.

It's complicated there are two different situations.
You have Comfort Access and you want another comfort access key.
You don't have Comfort access or you want a non access keyfob.

For technical details read the following thread starting at entry 13.

2007 328i convert-

Had the same problem, ended up taking my ID and Vehicle Registration to the dealership, I think the electric FOB was 280.00 and the metal cut key was 50.00, to activate I had to Put it in the key slot and push the start engine button.

Now prior to that I looked at the video's, ordered the spare key fob's, electronic equipment and key making machines. And can now make keys for any car on the market, BUT I decided against doing that with the 328i because it required me to remove the CAS from the car, take it apart- connect the chip inside to the computer at my desk, program the key fob codes that I found on the new key fob's that I had purchased in the CAS chip, re-assemble and put back in the car.

If by chance you have an electrostatic charge when you touch the chip in the CAS you may "fry" or "break it", and I will not tell you the cost of replacing the CAS, but it would involve towing the car to the dealership.

this is easy to do in ISTA under the vehicle maintenance/body/locks and remotes tab.

if yo uhave comfort access and just do the dash thing it will not be a comfort access key.
PO had a new fob/key for my car and it didn't do CA stuff until I changed it's ID number.
only the first 2 IDs will do comfort access things.

goto the bimmer geeks website, buy can adapter, download software.
it's simply the best diagnostic/programming software because it's the factory solution.

I use an ancient thinkpad x60 to run it. so dig up an old laptop.
