Low engine oil message

On two occasions within the last two days my 08 525i N52 E60 right after shutting off the engine the little Oil can symbol has popped up in the instrument cluster and Oil level at a minimum message has appeared on the center screen. Both only appear for a few seconds and then disappear.

In checking both the Engine oil and Engine oil level with the Controller in the start up menu both items appear as being OKAY. My problem is which of these indicators should I believe as I don't want to fill the engine with unneeded oil or worst, run the risk of damaging the engine by ignoring the Low engine oil indicators.

I have just completed a 130 miles highway round trip and no messages or symbols have been displayed. It's at times like this that I really miss having a dipstick. Would really appreciate your suggestions on what action I should take.

My E46 M3 had both a low-oil light and a dispstick. As the car got older, I'd get false alarms from the low oil light. The actual oil level would be half-way between MIN and MAX on the dipstick when I got false alarms. Yeah, the light would sometimes come on right as I shut the engine off.

I once had a massive leak from the timing chain cover, losing about a quart in about one mile. The light came on for real then.

BMW electronics are know for having little gremlins pop up from time to time, but in regards to something as crucial as engine oil I don't want to take a chance on that, that's for sure.

I've had a e90 330i and now a e61 530i both with N52.
When you get the notification on shutting the car off most of the time you also have it on your dash in the form of a very small yellow triangle, sometimes hard to spot when there is no *pling* sound paired to it.

A week ago I had a message too just like you and from experience I know that unless you spot some heavy oil leakage just check again the next few days. It's not popped up again for me and stayed in this position, just below half for a while now when checking in iDrive.
If it keeps popping up just add half a liter at first and see what happens

Or if you are really worried you can always add just a bit of oil, like 250ml or so and see if that solves it?

The last check I did was using the Controller to call up the i menu and with the engine running it showed the oil level at the minimum mark on the digital dipstick so I added 1 litre of oil. Since then I have not driven the car any distance so I plan on driving it for about 100 km and then checking the level again for my peace of mind.

Perhaps your oil level sensor is failing. On my E46 the yellow oil light would often come on for roughly 30 seconds and then go back off. Some others on E46Fanatics told me that was what the sensor does when it's failing. I replaced the sensor and never had a problem again.
