what is good replacement for F30 328i?

To get prepared for the possible N20/N26 timing chain meltdown, a few friends with F30 are preparing a list of F30 successors.

The G20 is now E39 5-series dimension, the 2-series GC can be an option but real seats look torturous. My thinking is G20 330e, but the extra weight and reduced trunk seem a trade off.

One friend suggests these 4:

Focus RS
Civic Type R
Impreza WRX STi
Golf R

These 4 all have manual transmission standard!

The bad thing is, local dealers usually have markups above MSRPs on the above 4 ....

Any other suggestion?

test drive a Genesis G70, MT's Car of the Year. They "stole" the head of BMW's M division to be part of the team in developing their luxury sport division. It's also available with a 6MT.

Based on the choices I'm guessing interior space is not important as all are a size below the F30. I drive a 2017 GTI 4 door and it's been great. Fun, far more than my F30, well priced and economical to drive. Mine has 69,000 miles and has been very reliable. It still rides great and has been rattle free although some owners complain of rattles.

Otherwise the G70 is highly rated as a RWD sport sedan as are the Jaguar XE and the Alfa Guilio. We all know about the Alfa's reputation for quality. It has none. Of course if they are good with an EV, the Model 3.

How is resale of Genesis versus Audi/BMW/MB?

Another option in that size is Kia GT Stinger, which also comes with MT.

EDIT: yike Stinger has no MT ....

That group of 4 in post#1 AWD except Civic Type R being FWD. The G70/Stinger, or G20 3 series is a tad big compared to current F30, so this particular F30 crowd is considering a downsize.

If they can wait a year or so the Mark 8 GTI will be here.

The Civic R is very highly regarded but it’s paper bag over the head ugly. The Veloster N is a very good choice too. How about the Audi A3 AWD?

Yes Type R is polarizing, rumor is that 2020 will have a toned down(small rear wing?) version with AWD? Veloster is 2-door though. A3 looks carmped in the back, but RS3 looks promising.

Obviously if Judge Cathy can save us from N20/N26 TC destruction that will be A-OK too.

The A3 is the same size as the GTI. Same chassis. The Veloster is a 3 door. I believe the passenger side has a rear door.

1 or 2 year old A4 with the higher output 2 liter. Similar engine technology and size to the BMW but a proven design. And, you get the advantage of full time awd versus the smaller A3 which is not fulltime AWD.

+1 for VW GTI

The GTI's sedan stablemate, Jetta GLI, is also worth considering. For 2020, U.S. market Jetta GLI Autobahn adds the adaptive DCC suspension as a standard feature. At $30,865, it's several thousand dollars less than a comparable GTI SE with Autobahn package, and at least $15k less than a comparable BMW G20.

Good choice. The only drawback to the Jetta GLI is that it does not get the GTI sport seats.

Jetta test drive 7 years back(while also test driving F30) were not that impressive, the ride was bumpy and AT was jerky. The Jetta interior also was subpar even compared to Honda/Toyota at the time.

Has 2020 Jetta GLI been greatly improved since?

Definitely. Jetta now uses the same MQB platform as the Golf and GTI. Current generation Jetta GLI's interior, while not quite as nice as the GTI (as Michael Schott mentioned, GLI doesn't get the GTI's beautiful plaid cloth or leather seats), is a dramatic step forward from the previous gen Jetta.

Here's the 2019/2020 GLI Autobahn's interior:

If you like the F30, why not a gently used 2017 or 2018? They don't use the N series engines.

That is a great suggestion. Do note B46/B58 engine now has timing chain the back, so any TC issue is "engine-out" open heart surgery. :[

The saving grace is, 2017 B46 still has 15 years/150000 miles PZEV warranty, and the timing chain is included as emission part!

2020 Civic Si Sedan 6MT is worth a look. Its gear ratios are very close to F30 328i 6MT, and @80mph it is about [email protected] direct.

It is very agile and light, yet it is quite [email protected] 0-60 is probably less than 6.5 seconds, with a 1.5L [email protected]/192lb-ft, and less than 3000lb! Even with 60/40, this car rotates quite well on those test ramps around Tesla factory.

Standard equipment includes LSD(mechanical?), adaptive suspension, sports seat, ballistic cloth with leather bolster, Honda sensing, short shifter, aluminum pedals, etc, etc, for MSRP $26k. The dealer put a $5k markup stickup on it, but GSM was OK with MSRP. This dealer also put $10k markup on Type R, go figure!

Civic Si 6MT:
First Gear Ratio (:1) : 3.64
Second Gear Ratio (:1) : 2.08
Third Gear Ratio (:1) : 1.36
Fourth Gear Ratio (:1) : 1.02
Fifth Gear Ratio (:1) : 0.83
Sixth Gear Ratio (:1) : 0.69
Reverse Ratio (:1) : 3.67
Final Drive Axle Ratio (:1) : 4.35

F30 328i 6MT:
1st - 3.68
2nd - 2.06
3rd - 1.31
4th - 1.00
5th - 0.81
6th - 0.68
Final Drive Axle Ratio (:1) : 3.91

[email protected] said tensioner helps but not the root cause.

Dealer foreman did check for both cold and hot TC tension and said both OK, and suggested not to touch anything pending possible extension ELW and/or further BMW action(if any).

It is also good to check out alternatives.
