So I just purchased the 2020 m550ix and was told the exhaust is louder then prior models. Has anyone done this on a 2020 model?

i took out all 4 resonators - the 2020 probably has 2 only, similar to the m850i, so you can remove those 2 and have a sound that is a bit louder.

Which "two" would I tell them to take out? Like, how would I direct them to do this?

it's very self explanatory once the car is up on a lift. Any exhaust shop tech will know what to do once the car is up on a lift.

How did yours turn out? Did they weld it? What did it run you? I hear $200ish. I was quoted more than double that

I paid more than 200. The exhaust is one piece all the way back it takes someone a while to do the job. I think I paid like 425. Iíd do it again. Car sounds good.

Itís took the guy who did mine around 4 hours. If it was bolt on stuff would be easier.

I only removed the larger resonators on my '19 M550i (the ones closest to the muffler) and it sounds great. I left the smaller ones on. I didn't want it to be too loud and could always go back and have the second set removed if I really wanted. I was parked by a German mechanic who heard it start up from cold. He came over to compliment the sound and asked if I did the resonator delete. The sound is decently improved at idle and you can really hear the difference when you get on it.

$175 in So Cal. Took about 45 mins.

It would be great if someone with a 2020 M550i could post a picture of their car on a lift to compare the resonator set up and what was changed for 2020.

I got rear resonator removed, added a nice bump in sound without going full delete.

Would this work on a '17 540i?

Yes, it will work on any car with resonators, but you need to look at the exhaust and see if or where the resonators are located, and can be removed.

How would one do that short of taking it to a shop? I'd like to be able to go into the shop and tell them exactly what I'd like done.

You obviously haven't read all the posts in this thread. So here are the steps:

1) Go to post #21 and print a copy of the photo of the resonators.
2) Find a reputable muffler shop
3) Take the photo to the shop and tell them you would like them to remove the resonators in the picture from your car, and replace with straight pipe.

Done!

So, you're right, I wasn't clear in my question. I'm curious about having just one resonator taken out.

Does it matter which one? If so, which one would you pull? And has anyone noticed any appreciable change in engine performance/smoothness/mgp with the change in backpressure?

I would be inclined to do what SyscoBMW did in post #38 and remove the larger of the two resonators. It makes sense the larger one will have more impact. It has not been confirmed, but that seems likely what BMW did on the 2020 M550i. (I sure would like to see if that is the case). I highly doubt the change will impact any of the parameters you question.

I donít think there would be any performance enhancement. The resonators are literally straight pipes with little holes drilled in them with the outer area filled with sound killing stuff that kills the piping sound and removes basic volume of a closed straight pipe.

No, I don't think there would be an enhancement, either, regarding performance. I'm curious about the opposite, as resonators can create backpressure, which is necessary and (I'm guessing) finally tuned in a car like this to be at exactly the level the car needs.

That may not be the case, and it was purely for sound. Resonators really don't create backpressure, as stated by Moewron, they are typically straight through with perforated pipe that reduces resonances at specific frequencies. The rumors are the 2020 M550i has one of the two resonators on each side removed to increase the sound, due to complaints the car is too quiet. What has yet to be determined, is which resonator was removed, the smaller or larger one?

Here is another video on youtube with both resonators removed on a 2018

Okay another question- has anyone had to do any subsequent work after getting the resonators deleted? Like, re-flash the car or anything?

No- none at all is needed for something like this. Your replacing a straight pipe with tiny holes to absorb sound with another straight pipe without the sound holes. Even when you straight pipe entire exhaust and muffler delete you donít need to do anything. I deleted mufflers on my M5 with straight pipes as many people do, and nothing needed for that either.
