G30 (2017 - Current)
The next generation 5 Series, chassis code G30, arrives at dealers in February 2017. Looking like a scaled down 7 Series and riding on the CLAR platform, the new 5 Series will have a focus on lightweight and sporty performance. Engines options will come from BMW's new B family for the 530 and 540 and a turbocharged V8 for the M550i. Read more about the 2017 5 Series

G30 rattle right rear

Is anyone else experiencing an annoying rattle coming from the passenger's side rear. It only occurs on certain bumps. I actually traded my 2017 530i for a 2019 540i MAINLY because of the rattle and now my new one with 5,000 miles is starting to rattle too. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Since your new one is under warranty. Has the dealer tried to find the rattle??

I'm probably the only one to chase what turned out to be the seat belt buckle taping on the interior trim.

I have a weird rattle under my center counsel in the back by the vents. They tried to fix it but only made it worse. Iím going to keep trying but this is so annoying. 2 years with noises from the dash plastics and now the rear too. All I want is peace and quiet. I thought that was what I was buying!

The rattle in my car gives the impression that it's coming from an area around the passenger rear door or behind.

do you have the sunshades? if so, it is most likely the smaller one. I just have my sunshades open and it's gotten a lot quieter in the back.

Have the same rattle on my 2017. Only hear mine at certain temperatures and not all of the time. Not the seat belts. Lease is up in 6 months, so I can live with it.

New noise I'm beginning to hear sometimes is a groan when I turnoff the ignition and the steering column rises to the park position. Again not all the time.

My 540 is rock solid without a hint of rattles or other noises. However, my Subaru has an elusive rattle on certain road surfaces and it's very annoying. I sympathize.

The passenger seat belt rattle has been well covered but I've also noticed the pocket in the seat back can rattle under certain conditions. Opening it and ensuring it is properly seated again cures the issue, only reoccurs if someone has fiddled with the pocket.

That was such an annoyance in my 2016... hoping it is better in the 2019.

Doubt it. I have this rattle in my MY2020 530e. I noticed it was the Seat Belt when I noticed I only hear it when my wife isn't in the car.

I also experienced the seat belt buckle rattle on the passenger front seat. The buckle would rattle against the plastic trim on the side of the seat. What I did was stick a 2"x 3" rectangle of the soft side Velcro to the plastic where the belt hits and no more rattle. The plastic is black like the Velcro so it is not noticeable and seems to work. --BOb

I had this issue on my 2017 530i
It turned out to be the rear struts. They had to be replaced. Eventually it kinda came back and they put sound proofing in it. And as of today no more rattles been going on about 6 months now.
(Granted about 4 dealer visits in 2 years tho to figure it out)

There was a thread on this a year or two ago. IIRC the leading causes were the gas cap door, the fold down rear seats not being properly latched, and the rear struts. You could try searching for that thread..

There are a whole bunch of compartments in the trunk area, many of which are covered. Something loose rattling around in one of those - like the key to locking lug nuts - can be a bear to trouble shoot.
