This is why posting a request for information in OT rarely nets anything useful.

Getting back on topic now..... I had a moped once and never felt gayer. The year was around 1980 or so. I didn't need a helmet and the thing only went 35mph. The mpg was similar to the link Sailin gave, but I could never get over how stupid I felt while using the thing. I didn't have it long. End of story.

I think some of the smaller motorcycles aren't so bad. But still, where I live with the chance of thunderstorms every day for 5 months a year, I'll stay in a car

Thank you!

Also back On Topic: I did a search because I was instructed to find out a) the cost of a Scooter and b) a model that did not make Mrs. Wingspan look ridiculous.

I have located this one (LX150) for MSRP of $4,299:

http://www.vespausa.com/Products/LX.cfm

Mrs. Wingspan's commute is about 3.5 miles, one way.

Only kind of odd thing is her baker's hours, most mornings she's at the store at 04:00AM. Mind you, they must arrive in pairs of employe's for security and a manager is on duty. Since her store is a big supermarket chain in a popular public shopping center, there is most mornings an on-duty WS PD officer parked up in the lot somewhere. (Of course, my suggestion she just pack an M9 and a spare clip was met with a roll of the eyes. Actually she is a pretty good shot. )

My earliest memories of Scooters date back to the 60s in Germany when I had short pants and spent my afternoons kicking a soccer ball, so it's been a while.

Anyone else seriously thinking about this?

What the heck do you look for when shopping for a Scooter?

The LX150 is not bad if you stay off the freeway.

My choice was a Vespa 250GTS.

I love mine and it holds TONS of stuff.
Can run 70+ mph and at lower speeds get 75 mpg.
200-300mi day trips (the NC mountains are approx 100mi from my driveway) are no problem.

Having held a motorcycle license for 25+ years and owned nearly every type of bike (Harley, modern BMWs, vintage BMWs, sportbikes), I can say that a modern Vespa is extremely practical - much more than any motorcycle.

My '07 530i6 is washed, waxed, and in the garage - the weather is beautiful and the Vespa is just so much more fun.

^^^ Thanks Mullman, will keep that in mind.

Is Vespa pretty much the only reliable player out there?

What about spares? Cost to own? You don't have to premix the fuel anymore, right?

Sorry, total noob questions; I should search/google first.

Warranty is good (so far and from what I have read), but I only have 1xxx miles.
The 250 Vespa (and coming 300cc model) are water cooled, four stroke, four valve engines - as bulletproof and anything out there.
I plan on doing my own maintenance (whowouldathunk) and rebuild the engine at 50K miles (if I still own it at the time) or so just in case.

Fill it with premium and drive 150+ miles or so, no problem.

The other week the kids were with the grandparents and the wife and I dressed and rode it to Ruth's Chris.
She in a pant suit and I in a jacket and tie. Try that on a motorcycle.

I had a scooter in HS,

I didn't even want one, but my friend bought one from Garage sale, the ladies sister was helping her, heard my friend recommend that I get one, so she sold me hers. It was less than his and had like 99 miles! He hated me. So we drove them around for the summer, it was a blast!

Locally, I try to walk more when it's under 2 miles and ride my bike more for under 10 miles.

We all need more exercise, not less.

I live on a barrier island and everything is no more than 2 miles from the house. I started looking for a scooter about a year ago before gas started climbing. Well I waited to long looking for a steal. All the scooters are ridiculus in price now. The one pictured below is a Honda Ruckus, it does not challenge your masculinity when seen on it. These things are all over the place now, along with the Vespa look a likes. I am still looking but so is everyone else. Good Luck!

PS. Honda also has a Vespa look a like for $2000.00 its called a Metropolitan 50cc no motorcycle license required.

Remember these are still very dangerous.
I had a friend who was moderately injured after taking a leaf covered corner about 5 mph too fast. Ended up with a broken leg and a busted scooter.

I love my scooter in Taipei. I don't know what I would do without one. Scooters are great when you live in cities like Taipei,Hong-Kong,Bangkok or Singapore When you have lots of little trips around town that are filled with cars scooters make much morse sense then cars for small trips around town.

You shouldn't make jokes about scooters^^

I have a Gilera Runner 180 like this one:

With some modifications like an other zylinder head, exhaust and caborator they are fun mobiles!

From 0-70km/h a BMW 325i has no chance!^^

So be carefull If you meet me on a red traffic light^^

Bryce,

The Burgy goes so fast I'd probably go right past the FOS without even knowing.

The thing is really a lot of fun and can get up around 110mph. It travels quite comfortably at 80 and will hit 90 with plenty to spare. Don't ask me how I know this.
