BMW X3 Remote Start - Update: Got it installed

Have an 09 X3 with about 60K on it. Would like to get a basic remote start installed, has anybody done this? Is Viper a compatible product?

LOL, Viper lists 3 remotes for the 09 X3 but I have doubts that they will work and my e-mail has not been answered. Found a company at slick car .com that lists one as well. Two emails and no reply there either.
From what I read the Push To Start models have remotes available but the key start models do not.

As you will be deducing from the absence of responses, remote start is not a everyday topic among X3 owners.

In 10 years of reading this forum I can't recall it ever being discussed - but maybe I just didn't notice.

A few owners have had aftermarket alarms installed which maybe came with remote start but that wasn't their reason for getting one.

Given that BMWs can be a bit sensitive on electrical or electronic matters I personally wouldn't want to add something that interfaces with the EWS.

Nor would I want the engine oil to accumulate any more byproducts of incomplete combustion than absolutely necessary during a cold start because of extended idling.

One is not available for the X3, only the X1, X5 & X6. I'm not sure why they skipped over the X3, but I'm almost sure that they haven't been able to crack the code for the X3. IMO, I would skip over anything that wasn't plug & play.

If it works with E46 it should work with E83. Personally I wouldn't want to cut up one of my keys to bypass the EWS.

Just got a reply from Viper, he asked if my car was an E83. Thought all 09 X3's were E83's. Anyway I replied in the affirmative so we'll see what comes back

a Key Question

Found a couple of shops with experience installing remote start on our X3. One says that a key will have to be incorporated into the install. Now, the first option is to go to the BMW dealership and order a new key. Any other ideas on sourcing a new key?

You can search on this, but BMW is the only place. Anyone who tells you that you can get it cut and programmed is full of it.

How about giving them the plastic valet key to tape inside the steering column or wherever they usually locate it?

This. If you want to bypass your immobilizer this is the cheapest way.

LOL we live in the great white north where everything is more expensive but the valet key was $95. The system installed was a basic Clifford , all I wanted was to open the door in the morning, point & push the gizmo and start the car. All totaled the cost was about $550 + the key

Remote Start

Hey there.
Up here in the great white north R/S is a great option. Had it on our two previous SUV's and it was nice to go out on a cold morn' to frost free windows and a warming up vehicle.
Now the X3 was a challenge, lots of mis-information out there. Finally found a shop that would do it, had to buy a valet key and away they went
They used a basic Clifford system, exactly what I wanted, point the control out the front window at the car and press the button.
There's lots of options available but that's all we needed, works like a charm.

Yes you can get remote start in your x3 with your factory key, I'll get part numbers when I stop by the audio shop I worked at for awhile.

Thumbs down Different

^ Your car is a push button start and the folks who did mine said they're doable but twice as expensive as our key-start 09.
Did a search , Clifford apparently has a system for your car www.clifford.com/products/remotestart

Cardiac, I am glad to hear someone else has had success installing a remote start into a BMW (E83) X3. I own a 2005 BMW X3 (US model), I just installed a Viper 4706V (remote start) into my vehicle and the remote start works great. I also had to install a 556uw bypass module with a valet key to allow it to start. I was wondering if your system also allows you to lock and unlock your doors? I have not not been able to get this to work with my system.

There are ways to have a remote start installed and have no extra key to make it work.

Not sure if that means ews delete but there is a guy local to me that does it.

I'll find out what he does and report back.
