Apple Car Play

Have finally moved up to a 330i, and the car came with Apple Car Play, I'm not too sure if I like it, would love to hear from others who have in their BMW. I've only had my car 5 days I'm on the fence if I like it ot not.

I like it in rental cars that have no Nav, not in my BMW.

Tried back in December when my car was redelivered stateside from ED and quickly found out that it caused several conflicts with my iPhone Bluetooth -iPhone simple stopped pairing with car. Deselected CarPlay and everything worked. Got the car updated by dealer back in March (unrelated issue) and retried it. It seems that BMW fixed quite a lot of the CarPlay connection and stability issues. Then Apple also issued an update weeks later and now it seems that it works as designed. Which is not that useful to begin with iDrive Nav, IMO.

I do not like to use Siri all the time but that is what CarPlay forces to do. I like to see the texts received and CarPlay won't allow it (selecting iDrive interface allow texts to be displayed). I do not like Apple Maps when OEM Nav does everything that I want and more. All compatible Apps can be selected via iDrive so CarPlay is redundant.

At the end of the day, I wasted $300. This should have been standard like every other manufacturer.

Fwiw, I find it much easier to be alerted to, hear and respond to incoming iPhone texts through CarPlay than through iDrive, which is why I tend to stick with CarPlay. (Every now and then, though, I have to dig through the iDrive menus to re-teach the car to talk to me through CarPlay rather than iDrive.) And, yes, it definitely should have been standard, as it is on my daughter's...Honda.

So far I haven't had the connectivity like you did, I'm still learning the car, I like the new iDrive interface though.

I wasted $300 on Apple CarPlay and considering 'disabling' it. Siri is helpful, but the integration with iDrive is awkward at best and I don't like anything else about it.

We have it on our X5. It's buggy. Better to just use plain Bluetooth audio and phone. When it works it's kinda neat, but it's too frustrating when it doesn't. Like someone else said, it's not just that CarPlay doesn't work well, it's that it can mess with your Bluetooth audio.

The car also cannot handle having two phones on CarPlay even with different profiles. It will always connect to the last phone used.

I've used Car Play, and don't care much for it, I find the phone, and navigation much better through IDrive.

This past weekend, I had a rental car (GMC Acadia), and it had GMC's IntelliLink, which had Android Auto. I found Android Auto MUCH better than Car Play. I thought the navigation, which used completely integrated Waze, was even better than the IDrive navigation. I wish/hope BMW pulls their heads out of their butts, and integrates Android Auto into Idrive.

Was talked into it by the SA and my son. Had nothing but connectivity issues especially with Pandora. Sometimes it would work, other times not and had to keep rebooting the phone in order to get anything to work. When I made the appointment with the Genius I voiced my concerns and we just disabled it and went to the BMW system. 1000% better.

CarPlay also is not compatible with the 1-8 shortcut buttons, does not have full-screen navigation, and has a confusing UI. It also requires you to keep Wi-Fi on your phone in the on position which really hurts battery life.

We never use ours.

Carplay is horrible, my wife's car has both Carplay, and Android Auto, she uses Android Auto, and loves it, she uses Spotify for music, and Waze for navigation - Spotify is actually integrated into Waze.

I really wish BMW had gone with Android Auto instead of Carplay.

Plus OEM nav shows directions in the HUD.

Apple Car Play

I’ve been using CarPlay for about 3 weeks now and I noticed that I’m going through cellular data much faster than before. Mostly I’m listening to music and podcasts through CarPlay - supposedly files that are downloaded onto the phone. Does CarPlay rely on cellular data to function primarily?

To be clear, it's not that CarPlay is bad, it's that iDrive is so much better.

It was only $500 so my dad got it anyway. He has hopes that within the three years of the lease an update by BMW might make it not suck.
