Shifter stuck in N postion

Hello,

Recently purchased a 2006 M5 E60 and started getting transmission malfunctions/engine errors like I have read on other threads. Before I could take it in to get it looked at the car failed and died in my driveway. The shifter is now stuck in the Neutral position. The car wonít start. The smg pump will not make a sound or prime when I unlock the car. Battery voltage is 12.38 when car is off. Iím assuming the smg pump is stuck in gear and wonít allow me to move the shifter. I havenít been able to find a manual bypass to put the smg pump into neutral to allow me to move the shifter. Is there one? Waiting to get codes read by a friend as well.

Thank you,

Travis

Charge the battery.

There are several things to look at here. First, like Doug said, charge the battery and do it from the jumper posts in the engine bay. This car gets spooky with only a slightly low battery. I keep mine on a charge 24/7 while in the garage. The smg pump is not running so your smg hyd pressure is low and won't allow you to shift gears. There is no bypass. Gear selection is electrical, not mechanical on this car. You're lucky you're stuck in neutral. I always park mine in neutral for this no start reason. If stuck in gear, and you allow a tow truck company to slide it up on a flat bed backwards and hence the motor turns backwards due to them snaking it up on the flatbed, you'll destroy the 2500.00 vanos pump inside the engine. It can't rotate backwards. It's happened alot. Next if no start, I would replace the smg pump relay located in the black electonic box on the right side of the firewall in the engine bay. That's another routine relay I change. There is a good chance your smg pump motor is bad. I did a DIY for replacing this over on the m5board website. The brushes in the motor wear like brake pads. I change mine early before it fails. My luck I would be in the middle of an intersection waiting to turn left when it fails. If in gear, you ain't pushing it out of the way. A lot of dealers change the whole smg system out for thousands of dollars when in reality it's only a 400.00 pump motor. A good time to flush the smg hyd fluid out too when changing the motor.
Keep us updated.

battery was bad. just put a replacement in and same result. car won't start, shifter still stuck and won't move. only code that shows is P0700. it says service engine soon. menu shows all systems ok. is there a way to see how low the smg hydraulic fluid is? or a way to fully test the pump motor? I will check out your DIY thread on the M5Board next. I will also look into replacing the relay. thanks for all the help.
