A member of the tribe no longer.

Well, I'm out. Sold my F22 this morning, with something other than a BMW in line to replace it.

Not that I'm planning on leaving, mind you. Now I get to hang around and make fun of "those damn Beemer owners".

2019 Mustang GT. 460 HP of 3-pedal naturally-aspirated American V8 excess, with all just about the toys, including the magnetically adaptive suspension (that actually has a noticeable effect, unlike the one in my F22) and a 4-setting adjustable exhaust that ranges from "boringly quiet for the neighbors" through "not really street legal anyplace".

After my wife stomped on the concept of a Miata while next to an 18-wheeler on the test drive ("Buy whatever you want, but I will never get in one of these again."), I decided I was going to try overbearing and impractical for what's become our weekend car.

Off the production line today. Rumor has it that it's 21 days out.

My bimmer won't let me go. It's like a crazy stripper girlfriend that won't let me break up with her.

A month left on my 428x GC lease but the BMW deals were lousy unless you want a loaner. Leased a 2019 S60 T6 R design for a decent deal though they are getting much better. Had to overlap because of another lease coming due.

Took the 428 on one last goodbye road trip before turn in as I am significantly under miles.

Well, 2/3 of the way through the trip and gave it gas and got the dreaded "Gong." Drivetrain malfunction. Full power not available. Thing is sitting at the dealer right now.

That being said, I will have a few haggard rims, runflats and mats to get rid of in the NY area once the car goes back.

Here's a question -- if the thing sits for more than a month, has anyone ever got the to knock a month off the lease? I figure no but worth asking.

I've never had a lease so I am not certain, but I think I've seen people get a payment covered by BMW, although it may have been cases where the car was out of service for a month early enough in its life that a Lemon Law threat was valid.

Zooks -
I disappeared from a BMW (and the Bimmerfest Forum) for a few years when I couldn't have a BMW at my overseas job. But when I got back to the states, I rejoined the fold. Your time on this forum was noteworthy on both bookends of this time. Seeing you post that you were leaving BMWs is like saying, "Wait. It's not Czechoslovakia anymore? That can't be right."

I'll be interested to hear your stories once your pony arrives. Don't forget pics.

Absolutely.

Bit of a delay has popped up. The Flat Rock plant went down for 3 weeks due to supplier strikes in Mexico, and now there's apparently a shortage of steering wheels from those same suppliers, causing many cars to be stacked in the plant's parking lots without a wheel.

But, it should still get here about the same time as the nice weather. And, yeah, pics or it didn't happen!

No problem.

I hadn't posted yet, not because I was waiting but because I'm lazy. The guy who does the tracking asks one thing - post a pic when you get it, so I made sure to do it for him.

It has an active exhaust with 4 settings: "I like the neighbors", "Normal", "Legal many places", and "Not Legal Noplace". Driving with my wife the other day, she told me that I could have the exhaust booming or the radio, but not both.

Well, now that I've been shamed into it, here are a few more. The Kona Blue paint is interesting. In some light, it's a heavy bright metalflake blue. In other light, almost purple.

Wow! Seriously? I thought only GT-xxx brethren have a switchable exhaust modes. Can you spend few extra words on it and how you activate modes and what exactly happens when you do?

Curse of a blue car. Right light and people will literally stop to watch mine, wrong light and I might as well be driving a rickshaw.

Re-view! Re-view! Re-view!

Congrats and good luck with the car!

It's very nice, but it does set you back $900. 4 different noise levels (Quiet, Normal, Sport, and Track) independently set or coupled to selectable driving modes which effect steering feel, exhaust setting, and the magnetic adjustable dampers (a $1700 add-on).

In quiet mode and below 2500 rpm, it's no louder than my V6 Tacoma. Normal mode is what you expect from a current sporty-looking car. Sport mode sounds like a BMW sport exhaust plus about 10%. Track mode is just stupidly loud. All the baffles are out of play, and it's likely not legal on any road.

Naturally, on the day I bought it, I drove past my normal highway exit and on to the next one down. That put my on Rt.495 behind our house, about 1/3 of a mile away with the local municipal airport and a couple of stands of trees between the highway and my house. I called home, flipped into "Track", had my wife go out on the back porch on the phone, and downshifted with a throttle blip as I passed parallel to the house. My wife (on the phone with me) said "Is that you?".

Exhaust mode switching can happen one of three ways: a clock setting for quiet start, via the drive mode selection toggle, or a separate selection off the steering wheel controls.

I have mine set to start in "Quiet" if it's between 9pm and 9am. There are two little kids living directly across the street and inline with my exhaust, and I want to keep the relations with the neighbors friendly.

Past the clock setting, exhaust mode selection is easy. The car always starts in "Normal" mode for suspension, steering, and exhaust (unless overridden by the clock setting). There's a toggle on the lower right corner of the center stack. One flip up displays the current mode, subsequent flips move it between a user custom "My Mode", Sport mode, Track mode, Drag mode, Snow/Wet mode, and back around to Normal.
  • Normal mode is Normal exhaust, normal suspension softness, and normal steering effort.
  • Sport mode tightens up the suspension, increases steering load, and opens the exhaust to Sport.
  • Track tightens the suspension even more and opens the exhaust fully.
  • Drag softens the rear suspension so that the car squats on launch, and puts the exhaust in Track. Comes with line lock, so you can destroy $500 worth of tires in a few minutes.
  • Snow/Wet goes to normal exhaust/suspension/steering, reduces the throttle response, and turns the stability nannies up to 11
.
You can also change the exhaust and steering feel settings in any mode to whatever you prefer, using an option button and a few cursor steps on the steering wheel. Suspension settings are always tied to the drive mode. No big deal with a manual transmission. I could see that being irritating if it was an AT.

Coming soon, after I get more than 250 miles on it and can start to wind it out a bit.

So many buttons on the steering wheel (22 different spots) and you still need to look at a damn touch screen every so often to get it to do what you want.

The initial fun level is pretty good. Big change going back to NA after 15 years of turbos. I haven't really tried pushing it yet, but once it's past 3000 rpm, it really starts to move. I had a mechanical gremlin (screaming "belt against pulley that's not turning" sound) that popped it into the shop on the first day (and promptly couldn't be replicated and hasn't reoccurred), but no worries since. Nice ride for cruising in Normal, my wife likes it, and I'm working up the rate at which I'm taking the ramps.

There's a parcel shelf behind the front seats that's ironically shaped like two seats and is fitted with seat belts.

Time will tell.
