1996 E36 318TI compact starting issues

Hi All,

I have issues with staring my car. The old DME had water in and replaced. I used another DME and removed the EWS module and made a link on the connector to the EWS module harness, and now the BMW cranks, has the pump running, and has a fuel pressure reading of 42 PSI with key tuned/cranking.

Each injector has around 8v to each connector, which is as per the wiring diagram.

I removed a spark plug and is sooty, and I placed against the ground to see if its sparks, but had no luck. I have also tested the coil resistance of each lead, and each are around 8 ohms.

I removed the ignition coil pack, and tested the harness connector terminal, and have around 12 V volts at pin 3 to ground.

On these M44 engines am I missing something? I used start you bastard in the air take and it briefly went, which meant it must have had enough spark at that point. New plugs perhaps?

Is there something else to check? of just take the chance and get a new coil pack?

Any help is appreciated being this is the first BMW ive ownded.

Check the grounding points on the engine. It sounds like you have a poor ground return path for the ignition (spark). BMWs are notoriously picky about ground connections.

Dme issues

The old DME is 0 261 203 667
The new DME provided with the car when I purchased is 0 261 204 173.

Everything works but no spark. The coil pack resistance values match the specs, and all earth connections appear good - I even filed the coil pack areas to ensure good contact.

Does anyone know what would prevent the spark? I even used a jump lead and created another earth path to ensure its grounded.
