The next generation of M cars will use of a straight-six so highly modified that it will be nigh unrecognizable, according to English reports.

"It is for all intents and purposes an all-new drivetrain," unnamed M division officials told the UK's Autocar. The brand has made "significant changes to the base engine that allow it to rev beyond 7000rpm and deliver a much higher specific output [than the S55 engine]."

Autocar reports that the engine, codenamed S58, will be capable of more than 500 hp at the wheels. And while those reports are unsourced, it seems like a fair bet, since the current S55 is capable of 500 hp in its highest spec in the M4 GTS.

In the M4 Coupe and M4 Competition, meanwhile, it makes 425 hp and 444 hp. Autocar reports that these will be bumped up to 473 hp and 502 hp with the new engine.

The new engine should make its way into everything powered by BMW's six-cylinder, starting with the X3M and X4M, but making its way into the M4, M3, and (in a detuned spec) into the M2 as well.
