E36 SMG swap

Hey so I have a 1994 325 with a slipping automatic transmission and I was planning to take an SMG transmission from a 2004 325i E46 any tips ideas or thoughts?

Welcome to Bimmerfest!

You'll be treading into unexplored territory. I can't give any advice except get all the electronic info on that transmission you can find. You'll need it.

Would be way easier to replace the transmission and install a universal paddle shifter kit. Just google "universal paddle shifter kit"

Isn't the automatic trans from the non-M E46 a non-SMG box anyway? I'm pretty sure it's just a regular torque converter auto, and only the got the M3 got the SMG.

If you're going to do that much work, just put in a 5spd Manual.

That's how I feel about it. There's no point in replacing a traditional torque converter auto with the SMG, since the SMG was was not particularly enjoyable. Either stay with the standard auto, or do a manual swap.

And make it a 6-speed with lower ratio LS differential.

At that point I'll just convert the SMG into a 6 SPD manual since it basically is one to begin with
