4D16: SCR Efficiency - code cleared and gone...

Hi,

Around 200-300 miles ago I noticed 4D16: SCR Efficiency code when scanning with Carly. I cleared the code and it is gone. I have around 103k miles on the clock. I understand that this code may be related to some stuff which is covered by extended warranty 10yrs/120k miles.

I guess I should not have cleared the code but rather go the dealer to take a look (which could cost me $200 diagnosis fee).

Is this code always related to the stuff which is covered by extended warranty or not necessarily? Is this code stored somewhere for some period of time? In other words, is it worth to get it scanned at dealership? I guess the answer is no.

Thanks!

Could be related to the nox sensors going bad.. It's got an extension check bmw-rp.com
Wait and see it will come back more often. They won't do the work if there's no code.
Tell them to do both sensors as when one goes the other goes afterwards.

Random one off codes that don't set off the CEL are common on the diesel. When you get one, you need to drill down and see the frequency of triggering of the code. If the code happened once 5k miles ago, ignore it. If it happens weekly, then it is more of an issue. I don't know if carley can do this but ISTA+ can.

It will come back, if there are no other codes, it may be your SCR catalytic converter.

Piqued my interest and I discovered that BMW SCR catalyst is Zeolite-Y. Unfortunately for y'all, nuclear power plants use a zeolite coolant polishing unit, so I'll be refreshing my knowledge of zeolite chemistry.

My greatest career success was in directing the replacement of a highly contaminated polishing unit under man-REM, time and dollar budget after the competing organization toofed the job for millions of dollars of clean up.

At home I found my PO had bypassed the water conditioner for not understanding its function, use and adjustment. More than ten years later the thirty-ish year zeolite water conditioner functions effectively and trouble free.

LOL. Handbook of Zeolite Science and Technology, 1200 pages at ScribD.

Over the winter I had this code pop in and out setting the CEL to on and off. I've assumed it was due to age of the NOx sensors >155k miles on the originals.

I replaced the forward one this past week and went on a 600+ mile road trip. The system readiness never passed and the CEL came back on. I'm going to replace the rear one this week and I'm assuming that it will fix the problem since I've yet to suffer any issues related to pollution control.

If I understand the warranty extension correctly the NOx sensors are covered until 156k or 10 years. Code or no Code the dealer should be able to run them through a test to verify proper functionality. You will have to take the gamble and cover the cost of diagnostics should you be wrong, but you would hope to find out the reason for the code and could then act on it as a DIY or independent mechanic fix.

This is (or are) the the NOx sensor(s). I just had this code and it was covered under warranty. They ended up replacing both of them. They also had to replace my SCR Mixer but that was not covered.
