E36 expansion tank

So I took my e36 to the shop to get a basic 100k maintenance/inspection. And while I was getting a few things fixed they found out my expansion tank is "cracked severely, and leaking coolant into my engine." Parts and labor would have been just under $500. A friend and I took a look at it afterwards, and found it was not as bad as the shop it said it was, but should be replaced in the near future. Do you absolutely have to have a Genuine BMW expansion tank that costs a hundred dollars, or can you can have a different brand expansion tank thats a lot cheaper ?

You don't have to buy from the dealer, but you can look up the part number of the parts you're looking for on realoem.com or bmwfans.info and then go out on the web and find a source. FCP Euro has genuine BMW for $79. Behr is also a good aftermarket brand as they are an OEM supplier to BMW.

Go to an advanced autoparts/CarQuest, tell them to get on Worldpak and order one that way. should cost about 20$.

I have a BMW 328i 2013 There is a coolant leak, the expansion tank leaks all coolant by the end of each day & coolant light comes on. The expansion tank & rad hose has been distorted. The thermostat always shows normal reading& car has never overheated. Been advised head gasket wants changing?
