Car runs hotter on Highway

I have a 2012 328i with about 65,000 miles on it and I recently noticed that it's running a bit hotter on the freeway than on side roads. It's not running hot on either, but this seems unusual. It runs at about dead on 1/4 on side roads and around 2/3 of the gauge on the freeway.

Thoughts???

Google "map thermostat". BMWs (and other cars) are designed to run hot in low-load situations (like constant speed highway driving) so as to increase efficiency. When you're in stop-and-go, it runs the engine cooler so that the chances of overheating are small.

This is entirely normal, and is the reason that BMW no longer has temperature gauges - the fluctuations would lead people to believe that they have a cooling system failure (like you!)

Also, your temperature gauge is OIL temp, not water temp. They reflect somewhat different measurements ...
