E39 (1997 - 2003)

Mein Auto: Two 2003 540i Msport's
Strut and shock replacement on 2003 540 M-Sport.

I badly need to replace the shocks and struts on my project car and I'd like to keep it as stock as I can to keep it simple.
It has the 705 M-Sport suspension package.
FCPEuro shows Sachs 556-838 for the 2003 sport (704 suspension) for $172.
They show BMW 31312229612 for the 2003 M-tec II (705 suspension) for $506.
What's the difference besides price?
I know there are alternatives but I'm less certain about them. I know people have mixed results with aftermarket.

No difference other than price and the BMW logo. Go with Sachs.

But.....what is wrong with your original struts and springs ?? Keep them.

For the most original ride quality, go with the Sachs. No sense in spending the extra money on the genuine BMW struts, they're literally the same thing. If you're looking for an upgrade, I highly recommend Koni struts. I don't have them on the BMW, but I have their STR.T struts in my V70R and I'm really happy with the ride. Firmer than stock, but not too harsh.

As far as the suspension code, I'm not totally sure about the differences between them. The struts are likely similar enough that you'd never know the difference, but I can't say for sure.

The M-Sport Suspension II as used on the 2003 540 M-Sport used M5 shocks and struts. That is the reason for the huge cost difference. Up to you if you wish to keep it original or not. But much of the mystic/allure of the 2003 540 M-Sport was the many special features and those shocks/struts where one of them. I verified the part numbers when I removed mine to install coilovers. Part numbers came up as the M5 parts

It's my project car so I don't "need" to keep it totally stock. I'd like to keep it close to stock to keep it simple. The shocks and struts that are on it currently are totally worn out. I noticed it when I was replacing the front and rear suspension arms and ball joints. The struts have oil leaking and running down the whole assembly. The rear shocks have an oil smudge at the top so they are just starting to leak.
With all the new parts and new tires (and cooling system), I finally felt it was safe enough to actually drive. The shocks and struts are so worn out the car rode like a 1970's Chrysler. Lumbering and floaty.
I don't want to replace the springs, just the dampeners and I want it to be as "plug and play" as I can.

yes, in my quest to find a so called good price for a OE front strut replacement

on my sport wagon...Stay the hell away from Schmeidmann... Santaclause. That said, Sachs spec'd me with those Advantage 556-838 ft. strut replacements for my 2002 (S227A) suspension...in writing. Bought those: wrong! The were awfully harsh, the wrong strut insert. The SACHS Advantage 556-636 work fine in my car now. There used to be much confusion of this much to my dismay and wallet. Those red label SACHS advantage inserts you mention above and that I used are for the E39 sedan with sport suspension (not the 2003 E39 sedan with the M5 parts). Dare I say ask SACHS? I'd say ask as you are doing here in the forums and maybe give these KONI's a try on lowest settings and creep into how you like them set after a few miles I've used KONI's for 35 years and have been able to dial them in to happily meet my 'custom' needs on several non-BMW applications.

You are on the right track. Don't replace springs unless physically broken. They don't "wear out".
