Bmw codes

When I called the dealer about my Crankshaft Malfunction message, the dealer told me that if you scan a BMW at a regular garage, the error codes the scanner reads are different for a BMW than other cars. Is that true? Had a check engine light that read as “Crankshaft Sensor Signal Missing” at a local garage. I thought error codes were universal. Help please!

Somewhat true. There are generic codes (p-codes), and manufacturer specific codes that can read more inputs. Agree time to be skeptical of your dealer though. Gluck!
