5 Years with my 435

I just passed the five year mark with my 435....which I picked up in Munich on June 2014. I have 40,000 miles on it and obviously don't drive it a ton. I have not had any major problems. Cosmetically I replaced the orange reflectors, with blue, changed out the stock wheels for black ones and tinted it all up. Other than that, I've left her as is. It's a great car. We all have our individual preferences and annoyances as enthusiasts....five years in, I still love this car.

I've got 80k on mine which will be 5 this September. Just DIY'd the brakes only to find I still had around 30% life despite iDrive estimating 4-5k miles for the front and rears, respectively.

Throughout my ownership the only unplanned maintenance I've had to do so far outside of warranty was the oil filter housing gasket which was showing signs of imminent leakage during an inspection. That was an $80 DIY between the pair of gaskets, some coolant, and a couple tools to help out with the confined working space.

Knock on wood, but the car has been rock solid. N55 is a fantastic engine.

The N55 had been out a few years before they debuted the 4-series in 2014. So despite the coupe being all new, the guts were not. The 4-series was so new I hadn't driven it or even seen that the Estoril Blue before walking down the steps at the Welt.

Hi,
That is refreshing to read a post about some one who says they still enjoy their car after 5 years. I also have 435ix. I have had it for 1.5 years. I bought it with 22k miles and Im now at 36k miles. I dont drive a tremendous amount either. I really enjoy the few days a week I drive back and forth to work. I truly enjoy virtually all aspects of the car. I have powder coated the wheels black, mppk and mpe, sprint booster and bavsound audio upgrade. I bought a six year extended warranty from my local BMW dealer and plan to keep the car for another 4.5 years till the warranty expires. Im still so happy with my choice to buy and drive this car for six years. I dont see that changing.

Yep. I still have the original brakes....and am making sure I keep the fluids regularly changed.

I have only flushed the brake fluid. What other fluids have you had changed? My brakes are original although they told me my front pads are getting close to needing replacement. If you are a BMWCCA member, then you would have probably heard of Mike Miller who answers questions about your cars. He has a long term maintenance schedule that I attempt to follow:
--oil every 7500
--coolant every two years
--power steering fluid every 30K
--brake fluid every year

Those are the highlights. So nothing too complicated. Essentially if you read his stuff, he noticed that previously when BMW didn't cover maintenance, they would recommend things be changed at much shorter intervals....and then when BMW started offering maintenance for "free", suddenly stuff become lifetime.

What kind of tune would you recommend? I've never done one. Where to start?

Tune suggestion

Hi,

Thanks for the maintenance schedule.

I would start with the sprint booster v3. It does not add any horsepower but the throttle response is far crisper and more immediate. There is a fair amount of lag with these cars. You might have just gotten used to the lag but it's significant. The sprint booster made the car feel more alive and more enjoyable to drive.There will be forum members who say this product is snake oil and that a tune improves throttle response and horsepower at a better value. To that I say they have not tried the sprint booster and they are only talking theory. After the sprint booster there are so many options on the tune. I did the BMW mppk with the mpe because I have been under warranty and don't want any issues with potential claims. My tune was expensive compared to what other companies offer. Therefore I would search the forum for forum members that are happy with their tunes at reasonable prices. Further speak with mike at n54 tuning or mike at extreme powerhouse https://x-ph.com/ I guarantee you will enjoy your car even more and maybe for another 5 years!

Just returned from a 1000+ mile trip with my 230i and found the driving very comfortable. We also have a 428i GC which has a larger luggage capacity, but with the seats folded down in the 230i, it was not a problem. I preferred to drive the 230i on this trip as it's a fun car to drive, feel more connected to the road with it than the GC. The 230i seats are sports seats and felt very comfortable; road noise level was about the same as the 428i GC.

Since when 435 has power steering fluid? Did I miss something?
Brake fluid is every two years.

Brake Fluid used to be recommended to be changed every year until BMW started paying for it. So according to Mike Miller, he still recommends it every year. Yeah, and oops on the power steering fluid...was just copying some info from the guide (mike)

No, ALL European cars have two year scheduled brake fluid. Only way one year was recommended is if BMW used DOT3, which is possible on old BMW’s like E30.
The two year schedule comes from two things:
1. DOT4 has much higher boiling point.
2. Technical inspections in Europe require brake fluid flush every two years. In Europe before registration you must pass technical inspection and one of the things they measure is boiling point. Adequate boiling point is not possible on brake fluid older than two years.
I had BMW’s in Europe, among other cars before moving here, and they were ALL on two year schedule.
Sorry, but Mike Miller is guessing here.

They take a brake fluid sample and boil test it in Europe?

Report back when you have 100K, I mean, 40K isn't a lot of miles.

You completely missed the posters enthusiasm for his car after 5 years. No he does not have 100k miles but I think his post is refreshing and on point. To drive a car 5 years and 40k miles and still love the car is awesome! I dont know you but from your comment it sure seems like your glass is half empty most of the time.

Congratulations on finding a car you really enjoy! My 2014 F30 is coming up on 5 years with 75k miles and I still look forward to a drive. I still marvel at how well the engine and trans are mated with the car. Looking forward to passing 200k miles.

I didn't miss the point..

Two schools of thought,

1) own a car and drive until is falls apart
2) lease every 3 years and not worry about the car.

OP is in category 1, I hope he still loves the car after 4-5 years.

That is not right. Why it is on 12 months, I have no idea unless there is something unique with driving conditions.

They have device that measures boiling point and moisture level.
You can get device that measures moisture level 1-2% is fine. 3% time to change.
