Leaving BMW land thanks in part to Harald Kreuger

One of the main reasons Kreuger did not have his contract renewed was that he dropped the ball on electric car development.

I am sad to announce that if all goes well, I am getting an Audi Etron and saying goodbye to my 535dx....between BMW not bringing another diesel and not having a true electric car available my hands are tied......for a number of reasons the time is right to move on.

I'll check in from time to time, but thanks all for the friendship, advice and good times here.

ART234:

I have learned so much from your many thoughtful and honest posts.

Interestingly enough, I spoke with the GM at the MINI dealership where I leased my current vehicle. Lease is about up so it's time to shop. I have not been able to build a 2020 MINI on the web site, even though 2019 MINI production has ended and any ordered cars from this point forward would be 2020. The GM 'splained that because there is so much unsold 2019 inventory out there, MINIUSA will probably slow-walk updating the build pages on their web site.

What struck me is that BMW (parent of MINI) has done so much to position itself on the cutting edge and, with a new generation of buyers who instinctively go straight to the web before ever thinking to visit a dealer... well, let's just say the first fully electric MINI will be available next year, with a 150 mile maximum range and far-from-Tesla-fast acceleration at that.

Oh, and our "stand alone" MINI dealer, representing millions of dollars of investment because BMW insisted that MINI be a separate brand, is now consolidating under the BMW Center's single roof.

In any case, good health and happy trails to you, and thanks again for all you've taught us.

Thank you for your kind words. I have learned a lot from you and the others here I will feel a loss from not having a BMW any more. The offer on the etron was just too good to pass up. While many are going over list price, mine is a small markup from invoice, and I'm dealing with a friend. The CPO warranty is up in less than a year, and while the car is very reliable, I can't take the chance on a large repair bill.

I will be gone from BMW but will check in here from time to time.

Thanks again and my best wishes to everyone!

Art. Sad to see you go, but I do understand why. A friend recently picked up a Model S performance. It is a very nice car and with about 300 miles of range and free supercharging access, it was a no brainer for him. I’m a ICE guy, but if I wanted an electric car, it would be tough to pass up Tesla.

glad you will drop by sometimes, @Art234. There are plenty of us who do so even though we may or may not have BMWs. I still have one in the family, but was a 2 BMW household for over a decade, and surprised myself recently by not picking a BMW for my daily driver. One thing that interest me about your choice is, you sounded like you were concerned about owning your BMW outside of warranty. Are you leasing the Audi or do you not have the same concerns for it?

I personally feel we have reached a tipping point on EVs, going from "WTF is that thing" to "I might consider that". Not going to talk about brands etc but I really feel that space (EVs) is going to look significantly different in the next 5 years, and many people will decide to get at least one in their household as a daily commuter.

JJ, with warranty up soon and the value of the car plummeting every month, the financials were in the right place at the right time. I'm doing this also while I still have equity in the trade...

I'm buying the car because my company has a generous car allowance, my insurance is over 25% less, And leasing doesn't make sense right now.

I'm now working on the charger aspect for my garage, and high speed charging stations are popping up all over the place.

I'll keep you all posted, and I'll still be around.

Best to all!

To OP, what is your thought process to pick Etron versus other EVs, e.g. I-Pace, Model 3/S, Leaf, BMW i3?

The Etron has more cargo capacity than ipace and Jaguar is still not where it needs to be quality and reliability wise. Tesla is a non starter because their cars are not as well made as the others and if they need repair you can wait up to a year for parts. The leaf is too small and the i3 is too small and to be frank too ugly.

I did my homework. Plus Audi has built in battery protection including cooling and heating and their charge curve on level 3 chargers is the best of all non Teslas.

Good points. Yes both iPace and eTron have similar battery protection designs.

"Both packs contain 36 aluminum “shoebox” modules containing 12 “pouch” cells each for a total of 432 cells. Although Audi didn’t specifically say so, there is little doubt that both cars use 4 cells in parallel in a group for a total of 108 cell groups. Most previous electric cars tended use around 96 cell groups."

https://electricrevs.com/2018/04/21/...ck-comparison/

i3 came to mind recently as a coworker's husband just got a 2019 [email protected] minu $10k corporate fleet and $1k loyalty credit, so around $35k including tax + fees. It looks like BMWNA tries to align i3 pricing to 150-mile range Leaf.

One cool thing about the Etron is that the EZpass can be integrated with the car. No external transponders.

Why would you lose the green vehicle discount if you get the integrated toll module. That does not make sense.

It is an SUV not a sedan so that's not an easy comparison. It is very stable with minimal lean in curves, and is well seated on the road. The ride and the quiet interior are just amazing.

It is less than a model S or X, a little more than the iPace. The list price of my car was $85,195, and is a Prestige model. It has basically all the whistles and bells.

Since I know the dealer, I also got a good deal for a vehicle selling in most areas at or over list.
Just had the charger installed, it's quite fast--full charge in as little as 8 hours.

Thanks for the well wishes, sorry to hijack a dealer topic.
