BMW $0 Ultimate Care - $600?

Just leased my 2019 330i two weeks ago. On the sticker, it says "BMW Ultimate Care $0 Maintenance Program". Yet, on my lease agreement under Itemization of Gross Capitalized Cost, there is a line item for Maintenance Agreement and a charge of $600. So this added $600 to the Gross Cap Cost of the car. In the details of the lease, there is a listing of which maintenance programs the customer "accepts" or "declines" -- each of which had an additional monthly cost to the lease. On the left column under "accepts", there is an item called "pre-paid maintenance" with a cost of $600 and a fee of $18.67/mo. All the other options (tires, keys, etc.) are in the right column under "declined".

Now when the finance guy was reviewing all this with me, I told him I didn't want anything extra. And I did not notice the $600/$18.67 because I thought I was waiving everything but the standard "free" maintenance program.

So I call him. He went on a big thing about how BMW used to cover all the maintenance back in the day, then they ended it, now they do just the basics, he remembered I declined everything, this is just a line item to account for the money, blah blah blah. It wasn't any clearer to me when I hung up why I was paying $600 for a supposedly $0 program.

Can anyone help? Is this a normal fee for a lease? If I try to get this charge off my lease, will I then have to pay for maintenance? Any advice, let me know...thanks in advance!

"Free" maintenance is included for 36,000 miles. You paid to extend that, maybe to 50,000 miles. Once you signed the lease contract, I doubt there is much you can do. Though there may be a right of recission - you need to check the contract for hte added maintenance program to see if you have some period - say 30 days - to cancel.

Bottom line: you got hosed.

Well, no, it's not extended maintenance.

Talked to BMW Customer Relations. What the extra $600 was for was "Ultimate Care Plus", which adds brake pads, brake discs, wiper inserts, drive belts, etc., to the free basic maintenance program. This is all the stuff that used to be included back in the old days of the free maintenance program before they changed it. I am going to leave it on, it's only $18/mo. and I am hard on brakes. We'll see how it goes and I'll be more educated next time.

If you only have 36,000 miles of coverage, I think you got REALLY hosed. I've had a lot of BMW's and spent way too much time here and on other BMW forums. I don't think I've ever heard of brakes being replaced in 36,000 miles, unless the owner was tracking the car. By definition, you don't have a clutch to replace. and "drive elts" are covered under warranty, aren't they? I know I've never replaced on under 90,000 miles. So I think you just paid $800 to have your wiper blades replaced half a dozen times over the next 3 years.

Hey, it's your money, so I guess you can p*ss it away any way you like..... You asked for advice, and you asked "is this a normal charge." It is not.

Thanks for the clarification, BlkBeauty. Ultimate Care+ retail price is $700, looks like you got a $100 discount for it.

Well, after Quackbury's comment, I did get to thinking: In my years of leasing, I've never had to replace brakes. So I went back to the Finance guy and said I was still not happy, reiterated that I thought I was clear that I was declining all extra coverages. And GUESS WHAT!? He is cutting me a check for $600! It might be because I mentioned having spoken to BMW Customer Relations, but whatever...he did the right thing!

P.S. I know there's interest on that $600 that I'm still paying, but my MF is very low due to multiple security deposits, so I'm just happy to be getting that money back.

Thanks for the sage advice!

You know what just dawned on me? That $600 was not an add-on, it was already baked into the payment I'd been quoted. If it was an add-on, my payment would have gone up $18/mo. Very interesting. I guess a lot of people don't question it because the Finance Manager explains it in such a way that you don't realize you don't need it. So glad I'm getting that refund!

So you're getting a check for $600. But you will be paying for that check over time, at the rate of $18 x 36 months = $648 total. You lose the time value of the money, and pay $48 in interest and sales tax for "your" money. Such a deal!

He got me a $50 saving on window tint, so I'm not quibbling about that. I'm just glad I'm getting the $600!

Agreed. It appears evident to me that this was not some inadvertent miscommunication but rather a deliberate ploy to extract more money from you beyond what you said okay to. And my guess is that this is most likely business as usual. I'm glad to hear you're getting the $600 back and I would recommend insisting that you not get stuck for the $48 in impending interest charges, regardless of any facets of the deal that you were pleased with. They should either rewrite the lease or just give you the full amount now - they should not benefit from that kind of behavior and you shouldn't have to pay for it. In case you can't tell, those kinds of tactics really make my blood boil (FWIW). Good luck.

The thing was, they didn't get any more $ out of me than what I had agreed to. Which means that $600 was already baked into the monthly payment they had quoted me. I wonder if, because I was insisting on the buy rate, they figured they'd make it up somewhere else. Yep, I'm furious about the whole thing. I did receive the check and of course the interest was not included (it amounts to $72, not $48). I've sent an e-mail asking why.

The F&I guy / gal likely had a quota of these to sell in order to qualify for a bonus / spliff. He got caught, but he still got his bonus. Crappy way to do business.

If you email them, address the email to the General Manager. Tell him /her it left a very bad taste in your mouth, and that will be reflected on the CSI survey. That will hit the dealership in the pocketbook

I think what happened is this: On their first quote, they had said they couldn't do MSDs. On my counter, I asked for an additional thou off the MSRP (in addition to the $3350 they were already taking off, plus the $2250 incentive). When they came back, they gave me the additional thou plus the MSDs and the payment had gone down maybe 40 bucks. So really what they did was give me the thou but slip in that $600 to make up for it. So really the reduction in payment was solely due to the MSDs. I don't know what they Finance guy would have done if I had caught the $600 fee...that would've fouled up the whole scam.

Unfortunately, I did the survey before I really figured all this out. Believe me, I won't do business with them again and I will definitely be more diligent next time.

Always take a wingman with you who will 1) help you say NO to the finance guy about everything added on at the last minute, and 2) will be a second set of eyes on all the paperwork since the FG will often jabber at you to distract you while you look at the paperwork.
