Trans question

Have to replace the trans in my 2001 740iL with sport package. Are all 5HP 24 the same whether you have the sport option or not? Are there other BMW series that have the same trans?

I have a 5hp24 in a 2001 740il that I'm parting out that I'll let go for cheap if you come take it out. The car was on the road until the owner overheated the engine.

You are in central CT and this car is in Staten Island NY about 2-3 hours away from you.

And I assume the sports package has a different torque converter, so you'd retain your old one.

How does $200 sound?

All 740iL's have the same transmission setup - 5hp24 without steptronic. 740i's - shorty's and 750il's were the e38's that came stateside with the steptronic feature. It should be the same.

And to clarify that a little further...ALL E38 750's that came to the states are L's and have the 5HP30 transmission while the early 740's also had the 5HP30 but switched to the 5HP24 around 1998 (not sure of exact build date/model year).

Others that used the 5HP24 would be the E39 (540) and I believe E53 (X5) as well as other manufacturers such as I believe Land Rover which they put the M62 in.

As far as the torque converter goes, I think the different torque converter was originally only in the sporty shorty (you can double check by searching for posts likely by QSilver7).

Yes - high stall torque converter used in 740i - shorty sport, and e39 sport automatics

Beware, I think the valvebody differs between the sport and non sport 5HP24's.

The seller posted his vin in another thread. The op should look up the transmissions in realoem, and see if they match

Thanks for all the help! Ogregev, I appreciate the offer but do not want to remove equipment. I needed clarification as to what the difference was between the Sport package BMW e38 and standard where the 5HP 24 was concerned. Is it just a software change that enables the trans to be the sport?

AFAIK the only difference is the stall speed of the converter, although Rudie thinks the valve bodies are different. Since the converter is an external part (basically), it's not a big deal to just use the old one.

There is only one valve body for the 5hp24 from 9/98 production on to the end of the run. The 740i - short wheelbase sport had the steptronic feature, the high stall torque converter, and a 3.15 final drive ratio. 740iL sports were less 'sport' optioned. I'd guess that the Ogregev transmission is exactly the same as the one iezzif needs

And if nobody buys it, it gets crushed with the car in 4 weeks.

Crushed? Ooooohh, not a great ending to such a beautiful car! Sounds like the old shock comedy ransom note routine of shooting the puppy if I don't get XXX.

The parts yard said that the trans part was labeled A5S440ZTE. The first 7 numbers and digits are consistent with the 740iL. Don't know what the TE stands for.

Yeah, legally it has to be dismantled, and the yard has a few, so it'll go right into the crusher.

Hopefully somebody will want the transmission, windshield and hood because those parts are too big for me to keep.
