I have no expertise in matters of BMW, although I'm learning, but that sounds like a rear end axle carrier bearing! No prob unless similar going forward .
If this were an early Chevy, I'd be more confident!

Thanks David /Mr Eric.

Is this expensive to do? Should I mention this to the alternate BMW dealer and see what they charge?

the dealer charges way too much for just a simple service- i did it myself. just the price of the fluid.

i also gain 1mpg

but if you cannot do it yourself, yes, find a shop that could do it, most important use the proper fluid

The front and rear diff oil changes are fairly straight forward.
Suck it out, pump in new.

The trickier power train changes are the transfer case and the transmission.
Still doable though.
The transfer case has an awkward brace to fight with.
The transmission requires the engine running while refilling and the exhaust is near by so careful hands are key.

David, I listened to your video with the volume turned up 100%, and I don't think it is anything to worry about. If it would ease your mind, go test drive another X1 and compare.
Best regards and Happy New Year.

Thank you ship4u-

Iíll need to take a deep breath relax, and just enjoy the car. Besides, I have extended platinum coverage (exclusionary) until 107,000 miles or 5 years. Although they opted NOT to pay BMW for the suggested transmission replacement.

I donít think Iíll be going back to that BMW dealer. Instead, Iíll give the one next to my office a shot the next time. I find it absurd that they suggested a NEW transmission if I donít really need one. :-(

That's the most important part. And, being in Florida, your only concern is the hot sun.
Best,

Best,

Agreed. And although I miss the snow, we never get any here.

There's a compatible transmission in good working order with 29K on it listed on Ebay right now for $595 plus $265 shipping. There is a brand new tranny listed for $2K as well. So the part can be had..but I'm sure there's quite a bit of labor involved to swap it.

Agreed, and I had a couple beers when I posted that. I was pointing out that the part can be had under a grand.
