A Good Day at the Shop!

So with a yellow engine CEL on the wife’s 2014 83,000 mile 328i I prepared for a $1,000+ visit to the dealer. But wait ...... thermostat stuck open ...... covered by a 10 year 120,000 mile extended warranty. New thermostat, coolant flush ..... NO CHARGE !

While there the Dealer told me we needed new brake pads on the rears ...... rotors were fine? Offered to replace the rear pads for $535 ...... uh thanks ...... maybe later. ........ drove right to my favorite tire store and got new lifetime warranty pads for $110 per axle ..... $10 to install with a coupon !

What I call a good day in the maintenance life of a BMW!

Does your paperwork show a part number of the coolant used? Past F30 thermostat recall only replaced about 1L of coolant, so it was not a complete flush.

And does the paperwork show the SIB of this specific extended warranty? My MY13 only have ELWs on timing chain, turbo oil feed line, NVLD, in tank fuel pump, but no thermostat for 10 years/120000 miles.

Thermostat showed Limited Warranty Extension 10yrs/120,000 miles per SIB 01 01 16

Coolant FP Number was 82-14-2-209-769

Just did all 4 corners on my car - new pads and rotors and saved a ton over what the dealership wanted (approx $1600). I was able to get all OEM parts for just over $500 and spent about $100 in tools which included new jackstands - the real key is to buy the manufacturer branded parts (Zimmerman rotors and Textar/Pagid pads), not the same ones with the BMW branding on them.

I learned long ago not to go cheap with brake pads. A lifetime warranty typically covers only the pads, not the labor to replace them.

Granted, rears aren't nearly as important as front, but if you want to maintain that BMW feel and performance, you'd be best sticking with OEM, as @dwlink suggests.
