E60 M5 knocking issues and power loss

Hi all, I was recently plodding along the motorway at around 60mph when the my 2005 E60 M5 went into limp mode, I pulled over immediately and shut the car off as there was a knocking noise coming from the engine, the car has was put on diagnostics at the side of the road and was showing codes for misfires in pot 2 & 4, at present the car starts and does move very very slowly however the knocking noise is very prominent, anybody experienced this before I am thinking possibly VANOS failings?? Any feedback would be great.

I've been around very prominent knocking noise before, before the rod cut the block in half. Failed rod bearings characteristically knock.
Scepticism and Animal Faith (1923)
Scepticism is the chastity of the intellect, and it is shameful to surrender it too soon or to the first comer: there is nobility in preserving it coolly and proudly through long youth, until at last, in the ripeness of instinct and discretion, it can be safely exchanged for fidelity and happiness.

Eschew eristical argumentation. I am responsible for what I write, not for your understanding of it.
