Fuel pressure

I cannot get any fuel pressure reading from the Schrader valve when i have engine off key on unless i crank up car. With Key on engine off shouldn't I have some pressure? This is on 1997 Z3 e36.

You should have fuel pressure with key on. Do you hear fuel pump running?
