drivers seat will recline back, but not come back up

1996 328is with electronic seats. The seat back will recline when pushing the button back, but when pushing it forward you hear the motor running but nothing happening.

Thanks for any suggestions!

There's a nylon gear that drives the recline actuator. It's stripped. Replacements are available.

perfect, lots of DIY's out there on how to replace the gear. And FCP has the part for $30 ($10 off) right now, just ordered it!

And when you replace those gears, make sure they're in the same position that they were in before.

Gear Stripped

Common problem. Someone sells replacement gears and there is a video on how to DIY. I had my mechanic replace the gears but the ones I ourchased were bad.

So during Christmas I tried doing this, and busted the new gear trying to put the shaft into it. Turned out I didn't realize there was a tiny "circlip" on the end of the shaft that I was supposed to remove. So I ordered a new gear and it went on much better, with gentle hammer taps. I didn't have a new circlip so hoping it stays on. Not really much room to move around in the gearbox so we'll see. It works for now Thanks all!
