Black dakota leather

Hi fellow BMW fans, I bought a used 430 with black Dakota leather. It has a couple of spots in the rear seats that look kind of purple-ish. It almost looks like the black pigment was bleached out. I brought it over to a local interior repair shop. The owner didn't know what caused it. Before opening her own shop she detailed used BMWs at two local dealerships. She said that she has seen this many times with the black interior but doesn't know what causes it. Her only recommendation was to dye the seats. Has anyone else run into this?

I tried to takes some pics but you can really see the spots well. I'll have to wait for a sunny day. Have you heard of this before?

There is rarely any forum complaint of purple spot on Dakota leather. My F30 also has black Dakota and it has been trouble free and care free for last 7 years.

Maybe they are wear marks from child seats and someone "tried" to dye them.

Yes it sounds like wear through the dyed surface. The hard supports of a child seat would be a good candidate. Previous owner may have used shoe dye, a laundry marker, a marks-a-lot, etc.

Possibly - a black Sharpie can show up purplish.

Taking worn-through light colored leather back to a deep black is difficult with just a marker.

You might try some Doc Bailey's Leather Black - good in the car & on black leather clothing: https://www.buydocbaileys.com/produc...ck-detail-kit/

As you're in northern VA you could also check with Fibrenew, a franchised interior repair outfit or Metro Leather if you're unsuccessful on your own:

That wouldn't stop your average clueless cheapskate from trying.
