Source for Replacement Instrument Buttons?

I have a 2000 BMW 549i w/ sport package. I have two missing buttons that I really need to find replacements for - this is driving me crazy. The missing buttons are the "reset" button and the fan increase/decrease button. Please see the attached photo - I have circled the missing buttons in red.

The dealer quoted me something outrageous (hundreds of $) saying that BMW only sells an entire kit with a bunch of stuff including those two buttons.

The buttons easily click in and out from the panel. Does anyone know of a source from which I could order these buttons, or does anyone have a 540 parts car from which they would be willing to sell these buttons? It is going to get cold here soon, and I really need to be able to adjust that fan.

Regards,

Adam

If in fact the buttons can be replaced individually, I'd look at a salvage yard. Or you can try one of the board sponsor dealerships to see if they offer individual buttons.

How did you lose those buttons?

The buttons are held in by little plastic nubs on either side. They are easy to take out and click back in, so they can definitely be replaced individually.

The fan control button was loose since the day I purchased the car. One of the nubs had broken off on one side, but it stayed in ok as long as I pressed it carefully. After a year of use, the other nub broke, and at that point I had to keep the button in my change cup. I would take it out to adjust the fan, then return it to the cup. However, I had so much change in the cup (the pop out ash tray) that the button slid out and is now trapped in the central cavity under the shift lever.

Even if I could fish the button out, it will not stay put and I am not sure how to rig it to repair it.

The reset button was similarly loose. I was vacuuming my car, and accidentally sucked the loose reset button into the vacuum. The blades of the vacuum cracked the reset button.

So there you have it. An otherwise great car, but missing that fan control button is a real hassle. The button has a special shape, so you can't even control the button with your fingertip or a ball point pen or similar approach...something special about the edge shape of the plastic buttons is required to actually press the mechanism.

Regards,

Adam

I'm pretty sure BMW doesn't sell those buttons by themselves. I would check ebay and call up some BMW dismantlers for a broken climate control unit that you can harvest the buttons off of. Try Vines automotive. Good Luck.

You can get the complete set of buttons (BMW name "Set Caps") only under PN 64 11 8 375 645 (build date up to 09/00). Dunno price. Ask Crevier or Pacific BMW. The only other option is a salvage yard/auto recycler/junkyard.
LOL!

Do a search on Roadfly. I remember a few years ago Jim Cash saying that the front panel including all the buttons could be bought from the dealer for a very reasonable price. The buttons then could be individually replaced.

That was the key that I needed. My local dealer has 1 SET CAPS in stock under that part number. The fellow on the phone described it as a sheet of buttons, you pop out the ones that you need. My dealer has the part for $36.00. I am picking it up this afternoon.

Thanks for your help!!!!

Adam

Ok, I went to the dealer today and payed the $36 for that part number. All of the "caps" (buttons) come in a false face place -you just pop out the ones that you need.

I have removed the reset and fan control buttons and installed them in my car. All is right with the world.

I have all of the other buttons left over. If anyone ever comes upon this thread with a similar problem, and you are missing any button other than reset and fan, just send me an email and I will send you the missing buttons if I still have them.

Regards,

Adam

this is really an easy fix. I got the 'button kit' from my dealer for about $20 and the needed buttons just snap in.

Wink Missing fan +/- button!!!

If any of you who purchsed the "set caps" item would be willing to sell the "fan +/-" button from your set, I'd be glad to buy it from you. It is the only one I'm missing and I'd rather not pay $90+ for the whole set!

Thanks, Mike

540i climate control buttons

If anyone has a spare climate control temp. up/down button I need one. I need the temp. down button (the one with the blue arrow).

Will be willing to buy it from you rather than purchase the whole kit from the dealer.

bavauto.com has them also. I think they're a little pricey, but they do offer them.
