Grand Coupe rear glass shattered

Have you had your hatch glass shatter?

My friend had the rear glass of their Gran Coupe shatter yesterday when it was closed. She told me that nothing hit it, it just shattered when closed. She then said that Irvine BMW wanted $3,000 to replace it, while the service station near her shop wants $600.

This seems like something the warranty should cover.

We have a 2017 Grand Turismo, so have at least a bit of concern that BMW could have some sort of problem with glass breakage.

It is either a warranty or an insurance case. Most probably will end up covered by the "other than collision" part of his insurance.

i assume you're aware of moonroofs shattering. rear window is apparently also not unheard of.

i would not do it at a service station. as sergeym says, this is a comprehensive insurance claim.

may be worth reporting to nhtsa

unless there is a recall, wouldn't this be a glass coverage insurance claim? she can speak with her insurance company the terms of coverage.

Some insurance companies (like AAA, mine) do not have a separate "glass coverage" portion of the policy. Should be a comprehensive claim, at least thats what I would push for. Nothing hit it according to the owner of the car, so that should be comprehensive, I would think.

Is the car a lease? Need to consider replacement glass and if per BMWFS needs to be OEM (rounded and all).

I know we have discussed glass replacement ad nauseam here, but there is a recent thread mentioning lease return issues with non OEM glass.

Question Replacing glass- newer BMW GT

I suspect (doubt), because of the rarity of the GTs in the USA, that "aftermarket" (NON-OEM) glass for the hatch would even be available. Had a similar experience with an Audi 200 Touring we had several years ago. Insurance coverage "quickly" agreed to AUDI dealer & glass - told us that after inquiring with their contracted glass shops the piece would only be a "dealer-replace" item covered by the poilcy's glass terms.

Tell your friend to contact her insurance company. It should cover the cost less what ever deductible applies. Highly unlikely it is a defect. Chances are something hit or fell on the glass previously causing a tiny chip or crack. And it spread as cracked glass can do.

Yes that is a big expensive piece of glass. I recommend your friend use factory glass.

I had a Land Rover Discovery rear glass shatter in CO several years ago. It was parked in a garage. Walked out the next morning and it was shattered.
