7 Series - G11 / G12 (2016 - current)
The next generation G11/G12 BMW 7 Series flagship forum. Unveiled June 10th, with production starting in August the 6th generation 7 Series comes in a light weight package with extensive use of BMW i carbon fiber technology. The interior quality raises the bar with a touch screen and gesture controlled infotainment system. Exterior styling has been a sticking point with mixed reviews so far.

Perforated seats

Hi all,

I'm about to place an order for 2020 740Xi and I want to have perforated leather seats.
The dealer is telling me that I either have to upgrade to "luxury seats" or get ventilated seats option because standard Dakota leather seats don't come perforated.
Can anyone shed some light on it? Do I really have to purchase ventilated seats option? From my previous F02 experience it was totally useless compared to Lexus cooled seats. Blowing hot air most of the time was very annoying
Also, is Ventilated Front Seats package is going to get me perforation on the back seat as well even though there is no ventilation option in the back?

Thanks for your input!!!

No problem.

The perforated leather has a purpose...and that is to help facilitate the thermodynamics of the ventilated seat design. Unlike most people think...the seats are not air conditioned (blowing cooled air onto the passengers back & butt)...but as you can see in the explanation below...it draws ambient air into permeable media behind the seats. It's the principles of thermodynamics that provide the cooling affect passengers will feel (although some BMW owners claim they can't feel anything ).

The info below may not be completely accurate for the G series in regards to the number of fans...the number of fans may be different based on model or chassis nomenclature...but the basic operating design is the same.

From the BMW technology guide: (f10/f11/f06/f12/f13/f01/f02)

Active seat ventilation.

Keeping you feeling fresh even on the longest journey: the active seat ventilation ensures that air circulates throughout the seat constantly, removing moisture and helping prevent discomfort or driving fatigue.

A total of nine axial flow fans are integrated into the high-quality foam padding inside the seat: four in the backrest and five in the seat. The fans draw fresh cabin air into the seats and channel it through an air-permeable middle layer, distributing it evenly throughout the seat. Special perforations in the upholstery allow it to move through the leather, keeping perspiration to a minimum.
The three-speed fans can be controlled using a switch on the central console or a control on the seat itself, depending on your BMW model. The iDrive Controller lets you change the distribution of air between the seat and the backrest. The highest fan speed instantly cools seats that have been heated by direct sunlight, ensuring a comfortable welcome even in summer.
In order to prevent uncomfortable over-cooling of the seat surface, the active seat ventilation includes seat heating, which heats the air to a perfectly comfortable temperature. Long journeys become more comfortable, the driver remains alert and fresh, and - last but not least - clothes are left less creased.

I have a 540 with the Luxury seating package. The seats at least appear identical to the 7s. When the G30 (current generation) five came out they quit putting perforated seats in the back. I think it's goofy as hell, but must admit I never think of it anymore. My 2012 550 were perforated front and rear.
