2013 X5 voice commands

I found the voice activation function to be quite useless. It just is not able to recognize words and keeps pulling in the wrong information.

Anyone happy with their voice function?

Thx

I've had almost zero problems with the voice recognition and use it multiple times a day. Only one time can I remember when it incorrectly recognized my command, and it was probably because I was muttering. Mostly I use it to change the radio stations, but this thread reminds me that I need to go back to the manual and lookup what else is available via voice commands.

I don't have a problem with I use the guidance properly. You must say the proper phrases. Don't say "cancel navigation" (like Audi). Say "Stop Guidance." I love the "enter address" feature. Best technology feature in the X5 imo.

I gave up on it. In my '13 X6 50i (presumably the same exact system of course) it barely understands me -- in contrast to dragon dictation and siri who understand me easily.

The worst part of this for me is entering in a GPS address. You speak out an address and it doesn't just get the street or number wrong, but the STATE! Frustrated me enough to skip it altogether so far.

Love it and have been using it religiously on 6 different BMW's for 8 or 9 years now. Recognizes a Bahston accent just fine. Maybe it doesn't do as well with a Texas drawl?

I've lived in Boston all my 31 years, and while I don't have the accent, it still can't understand me!

I should review the manual and keep trying though.

The day after I bought my car, I was showing it off to my friend and said "check this out" and kept saying things into the system, but it kept pulling the wrong information. Just gave up, but will give it another try after reading the manual.

Can it distinguish between Wictor and Victor? Not that sophisticated.

This version of the voice command is suppose to have dragon nuance voice recognition software. There pretty good with their other pc/dumbphone/smartphone offerings, so BMWs case it quite surprising. Either they didnt really do a good job on the software they supplied BMW with or the Mic is just terrible at picking up human speech?

Maybe it is the mic? I do have to shout at the damn thing like I'm barking out orders to my kid from across the street.

In my X5 the voice command understands what I am asking maybe 50% of the time....
However, my iPhone ( SIRI ) understands me about 90% of the time.. Therefore I hardly ever use the voice command in my X5 and find it useless.

The mic setup need alot more active noise cancellation, and alot more than the current input which i believe is still one unit. They really need to just sub contract the Idrive HUman speech input to a dedicated phone maker....looking at you Apple.

Located on the left hand of your steering wheel on the top right side of the 4 buttons there is a talking head. If you play around with it the voice command will actually teach you a little about what you can say, I think you can either speak help or tell me more to learn other voice commands.

Someone here can tell you much more about it, but I've used it from time to time. Very useful in switching from one Radio station to another or navigation and things like that. I've attached a picture that should look like your buttons as well.

Oh! That's not good... and I don't know how you took that, but Rtfm in my mind means Read The Factory Manual. But I could see how it could be taken another way

Any chance you can reach back out to the dealer you purchased it from, unless it was an individual then you're on your own to purchase one. I imagine they're are some gently used ones online. And with everything being on the web these days, I myself signed up @ BMW online for a FREE digital Owners Manual if you want to atleast do that.
