3 month old 2014 F30 335i xdrive - brakes squeaking/squealing in reverse on cold days

Hi All,

My 2014 335i xDrive is only about 3 months old with less than 3,000 miles on it, and i first began to notice a month and a half ago when the weather started to get colder that when first starting the car up for the day and when reversing out of my parking space (garage parking), the brakes squeak/squeal. However, when driving out of my garage complex in forward, there is no squeaking when applying the brakes. And once the car has been driven a little bit and fully "warmed" up there's no brake squeaking even in reverse. The few times that the weather was mild in the past month, and when first driving the car for the day there was hardly any squeaking at all when reversing out of my parking space. It almost seems like the colder it is when first starting the car up (or the longer it sits in the cold in between starts), the louder the squeaking/squealing is when reversing.

I've read that a thin layer of rust can develop overnight on the rotors due to moisture and this could cause brake noise until the rust is cleared away during the normal couse of braking, however, even if i've parked the car for a few hours on a really cold day after using it and "clearing" the rust off (if this is the case), once i start the car again a few hours later, the car's brakes will squeal in reverse until i've driven a little bit.

Anyone else with a similar experience?

Brake noise

The new brake pad composition should result in both reduced both dust and noise - even on a 3'er.

My '13 535xDrive lives its life out of doors in the unpleasant weather. I bought it 11 months ago so its early days were low-mileage winter months. Not a single squeak from the brakes driving backwards or front out of my driveway. However, a parking garage might amplify the slightest noise I wouldn't hear even in my quiet suburban estate. However, if the noisy brakes on your 3'er continue I'm sure your BMW Service Center will be glad to inspect and correct.

I've noticed the exact same thing on my 2013 328i which now has almost 5000 miles on it. Just in the last few weeks since the weather started getting cold the brakes sometimes squeak as I'm easing out of a parking spot. In my case I've noticed it moving forwards and backwards. Actually, come to think of it, maybe just forward because that is the direction I'm moving when I'm coming out of my parking spot. It doesn't always happen -- only on about 3-4 occasions so far. Once when my car was parked outside in the cold for several hours, and the other times first thing in the morning. I have no idea what's causing it. Just thought I'd keep an eye on it and ask about it at my dealership if it progressed.

My 2011 X5 is in the shop right now, with the same issue, among others. It's been very cold here and in reverse it almost sounds like the brakes are grinding. I'll report back once I get the car back, which might be a while being as how the technician hit a retaining wall while testing it.

Same exact thing is happening on my 13' 328 xdrive, 12k miles on it. It started as winter set in, on any given day it may or may not squeal. Drives me nuts.

We have not heard a brake squeak on reverse but we have had a persistent squeak going to a slow stop no matter what temp from 30s to 100s.
Some form of brace is being replaced this week so we'll see if that fixes it. I'll do a follow up post later.

That's normal, so I was told by a German. Especially noticeable in the morning, could be related to cold and/or wet condition.

Just wanted to provide an update to those interested in this thread. I couldn't find the time to take it to the dealer to have this looked at, however, only a week or so after I created this thread, the squeaking/squealing from the brakes in reverse went away completely on its own. With that said, since i've created the thread, we've had temperature swings up here in the NE in the past month ranging from almost 70* a couple of weeks ago, to now being in the 20's and still not one noise from the brakes in reverse, so i have no idea what the cause of the issue was in the first place but i'm sure glad the issue has resolved itself *knock on wood*.

squeaky brakes you say??? welcome to one of many things you should get use to while owning your shiny BMW THIS IS COMPLETELY NORMAL! dare I say if you have zero brake noise you [email protected] sure aren't driving a BMW.

a few other things to look forward to...

coolant/cooling system issues
$500 battery changes... yes.. for real
paint chipping on front bumper cover (not washing bugs off) just wait for spring to come around, everyone will be complaining about bugs and how its a F30 design flaw... GTFO...
smelly a/c on startup (in humid areas)
the inevitable out of nowhere $1000-1500 repair bill for something you didn't know existed....

Re: 3 month old 2014 F30 335i xdrive - brakes squeaking/squealing in reverse on cold

My 2014 328xi just hit 3k miles and started squeaking a couple days ago. Mine does it almost always when rolling to a slow stop. I play music loud and can still hear it over the tunes. Im calling the dealer tomorrow to see what they say.

Its definitely not a rust issue. I have a feeling it could possibly be a rock or something.

Any similar experience with an attempt to get the problem solved? Will they replace the brakes or tell you its normal?

Mine has gotten worse as the weather has become more consistently cold. Now they squeak consistently, not just occasionally. I was thinking maybe it has to do with the non-BMW wheels that I am using with my winter tires, which made me feel a little better, to think that it's not really a BMW issue. However, now my suspension is squeeking too.
My last car was a Honda. Not one squeak in 13 years.

Mine used to have a consistent squeak when rolling to a slow stop. It was annoying and embarrassing. It took the dealer 3x to fix. They had to order a brake part from Germany to get it replaced. For now it's quiet.

The only normal brake squeak is from the sound when the pads need to be replaced.

If your car is under warranty, have them fix the brake squeak even to the point to where they have to replace both pads and rotors.

I wonder if its more pronounced in Xdrive models as the RWD Msport models reportedly have different brake pads.

My xdrive e90 only squeaks in reverse if I have driven in the rain prior to parking in the garage for the night. So basically parked with wet pads. I am couriouse if others have different results. Parking in a garage verses outside over night.

My car has a little over 2K miles. I had another F30 last winter (non-sport) and this did not happen. I have a sport now. This issue started happening as soon as it got really cold (around 30 or below) when driving in any direction (rev/fwd). It only happens when the car is cold and it if I hit the brakes a certain way. I can prevent it if I brake really slowly. It goes away once the car has been driven for a few minutes. It is very embrarassing and annoying. Not sure BMW would do anything about it other than say it is normal like they did with the e9x that is also in the garage and has been screeching for years. I'm dropping the car off in early feb for something else but I will mention this issue. I'll post if they provide a solution.

Add me to the list of 328xi owners that have noticed squeaky brakes in cooler weather conditions (mostly), but also in warmer conditions (occasionally). I figured it was just dust or moisture that accumulated during my drive. Once the brakes are applied in normal road driving (not parking lot), the noise is gone until the next time I let the car sit over night or during the day at work.

My Toronto-based 2013 F30 developed squeaking brakes in the last few weeks since the cold snap hit.

I am in Toronto and have the identical problem with my new 328i XDrive (see my introductory thread today). The brakes also squeak after driving in cold wet conditions, without sitting overnight. I have arranged for my dealership to look at and hopefully remedy this problem later this month. Stay tuned.
