Everybody I know that had an offshore boat had one of these up to the point where they couldn't be used any more. They had about 5 watts output and as the cell tower receivers got better they had an awesome range over the water. You could make a cell call from about 15-20 miles out in the Atlantic on one of these bad boys.

That's amazing. Always interesting to see how long old technology persists for some small group of people with a unique use case. I'm a fan of keeping old tech going as long as is feasible, in some instances. My personal computer is a Mac Mini from 2007, I think. I upgrade phones every two years, because I can - but my iPhone 4 worked fine when I got rid of it, and I sold it to someone who would get another few years out of it.

I went through one Moto candybar phone (got it when I was like... 14?), a few basic flips, a few nicer flips, and finally bought myself the first iPhone in '07 when I was a freshman in college. Mom & dad bought the first phone and I paid to upgrade to each additional. They paid for the plan. I was worse about phones than I am about cars.

My parents' birthday present was paying the early termination fee to get me out of Verizon since the OG iPhone was AT&T-only. I paid for the phone and plan and have been ever since. Amazing how cheap these phones have become. I think I paid $399 in 2007 for the 8 GB model that only worked on Edge data speeds. How time flies.

Now I have 32 GB of storage and LTE data that downloads faster than our internet at home. In my POCKET.

Mind still blown.

That's definitely a good sign.

I don't understand why you would continue to drive the car with a severely slipping clutch?

So I have the money and parts and I plan on going to RRT. I just need to find out how to get my car there. Also I drove it because I thought it would last a bit longer

Yeah so I got a text from Frankyln at about 11:30PM last night. "Stranded, please call." Called him up, he was 20 min south of Scranton,PA at a trucker stop, mech fan exploded and poked a nice hole in the rad. One of his buddies that was with him had work at 9AM, so he needed some help (even if to just ferry his friend back to Rochester to get to work).

I grabbed some tools and as much JB weld and other sealants as I could and then left. 2 hours later I get to the rest stop. He had already applied a bunch of JB weld to the radiator 2 hours before and was letting it dry. It was still tacky to the touch but we decided to give it a shot. We poured some coolant system stop leak (yeah we know how bad the stuff is but we needed to get the car running) and filled the system with coolant. Did a rough bleed and it seemed to hold fine so we took off. No issues the whole way back...

We stopped on the side of the interstate near the Ithaca exit, took a quick look at the rad. There was no leaking and the expansion tank was full. So he took off and I went home. I got home around 5:15AM. He texted me that he got home around 7:30AM.

His friend Dylan, who rode with me back told me that when he pulled over to the side of the road initially he was still 5 miles out from the rest stop. So he chewed on electrical tape like it was gum and then stuck it in the hole in the rad. It seemed to the do the trick. He put the JB weld over the electrical tape "gum" LOL pretty genius

Glad I could help him out.

Download the official Google keyboard and enable swiping words. That makes a huge difference.

Aren't you like my age? How is that possible?

I got my first phone way back in 2001, and my first smart phone in 2006 when I decided to consolidate my phone and PDA (aka high school). I'd been using PDAs since Windows PocketPC 2002 was around.

This day shall be ever remembered in the annals of time.

TONS of great apps to get karl. I have Google maps which is also the best navigator I've ever had. Simple note taker. YouTube Netflix some kind of keyboard weather bug facebook Pandora and the list goes on.

Bah I'm so behind on my reports at work. I went from call to call for 12 hours today. I have 3 Penn dot crash forms to do as well. I miss night shift.

Seems decent, but they're kinda moot. The rogue engineering units do the same thing in a much simpler way.

Morning OT!

I need some help here. My wife's apple cinema display died about 6 months ago. The company has finally given her the go a head to purchase a new monitor. Anyone have any recommendation? Budget is "whatever it needs to be."

Needs to be 27"
Work with a Apple Pro (tower computer)
She is a graphic designer, so she stares at it all day...

GO!

(I'm looking at James, Jake, and Joey... anyone else?)

I mean, if budget is "whatever" then get another Apple Cinema. If you want to spend more... economically(?) then take a look at the Dell displays. They use the same panels as the Apple with a slightly different backlight. So, very similar picture quality. Anything with DVI would work with a Mac Pro.

Can she get two of them, since budget is pretty open? Two monitors >>> one, any day of the week. And the computer will support two or three, stock.

My dad had a car phone like that, Ken. He was never the fastest adopter of new tech back then - mainly for lack of money and making things go as long as they could. He went to a realtor convention and ended up winning the phone in a raffle. So, he figured he should install it, and he did... in his '94 Ford Taurus. Champagne gold. Looked like this:

The whole car + phone setup was so 90s. I still remember the little *braaap* it made when you started the car.
