Powering a Radar Detector/Auto Power Off?

Hello All

I recently bought the Uniden 950 and was thinking of powering it from the passenger side foot well cigarette port in my 13' 328i.

Can anyone confirm if the cig. port power will turn off automatically after the car is turned off? I know the music auto off is around 8 mins but want to know if there is something similar for the two cig. ports so as to avoid draining the battery from powering the 950.

I was also thinking of mounting the 950 on the central RV mirror stem. There is another post from ShawnSheridan that describes an Escort 9500ix setup using power from the RV mirror using a mirror mount cable.

Has anyone setup their LDR 950 in a similar way? Any pics showing where the mirror mount wire goes into the RV 10-wire connector plug (inside the RV mirror console) would be very helpful.

Please let me know of your experiences with the 950 operation/saves as well.
Yes. That port is switched with the cars ignition or comfort access. I've used that port to power my dashcam for 3+ years with no issue.

I leave mine plugged in that port. No issues.I have the wire (flat cord) tucked under the center console, under the dash and trim right to the rearview mirror where I have it mounted. (suction not actual mirror mount)

I just picked up a 2013 328ix and need to install my V1. In my past car I had it connected to the OBD port with the V1 savvy, I first will try that if I can locate the OBD port, If not will move to the 12V on passenger side any one else have a V1 installed

What I recommend is going with this instead.

http://www.amazon.com/Escort-Direct-...ESRSS5XEFJK8SQ

You can hard wire right into the light switch, you open the panel, and splice the red into one of the cables (I forget the color) and put the ground on the black wire. Close it up and it works awesome. A little involved but was pretty simple.

Thread with directions

https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=515517

And to mount it get a rear view mirror mount. I got this one

http://www.amazon.com/PerformancePac...T5X3WX92HCEWJE

The screws were too large to fit but I used zip ties and it works fine. I know this radar model is different than yours but same concepts apply.

I have to admit, I don't understand why anyone would route stuff down the A-pillar and into the footwell when there's a far easier solution.

There's a green and brown wire for power in the overhead domelight fixture (Actually, that wire is in the set of wires that go to the mirror housing) and you can take your pick of either one of the two 10mm bolts that are exposed in the overhead as the ground. Tons of room to tuck wire, too.

I put my V1 on the passenger side of the mirror, high as possible, to 1.) Make the V1 out of my line-of-sight and 2.) Make the V1 as "invisible" as I can to anyone looking from the outside.

When I see peoples' Blendmount hanging from the rearview mirror, I wonder, "Is everyone 5'1" tall? Blendmount essentially creates a huge blindspot, and blocks the entire middle of the windshield, unless you're a midget.

My radar detector stays on for approx. 10 min, then shuts down, but it powers up once I "wake" the car up buy opening the door. I use the plug in the cup holders.

I have been running a dashcam and radar detector for a year from the cig ports and have never had a dead battery.

That's because the cig ports are shut off when the car goes to sleep.

Mirrortap FTW! http://www.mirrortap.com/bmw.html Combine with a blendmount https://www.blendmount.com/bmw-3.html (not sure what Goody4 is talking about, I'm not a midget and I have no blindspot with mine!) and life is rainbows and unicorns.
